  Cochem-Zell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1816 the districts Cochem and Zell were created, after the area went to Prussia.
In 1969 the Zell district was dissolved and its northern and middle parts were added to the Cochem district, which was renamed Cochem-Zell.
The lion in the bottom is the symbol of the Palatinate, the counts of the Palatinate had a castle in Cochem.

 Peter Nicholas Cochems, Winzer
Wilhelm Rinck was married to Maria Magdalena Muller, daughter of Wilhelmina Cochems Muller (Peter Nicholas's sister) and therefore Anna Margaret's nephew by marriage.
Henry Cochems at the age of 23 married (March 15, 1831 in Cochem) Anna Maria Goebel (Anna I), age 25.
Since the Cochemer Familienchronik does not give a marriage or death date for this child, I assume that Anton died as a child and the record lost or that he left the Cochem area.

It is generally assumed that Cochem Castle was built around the year 1000 by count palatine Ezzo, son and successor to count palatine Hermann Pusilius.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1051 when Richeza, Ezzo's oldest daughter and former Queen of Poland, gave the castle to her nephew count palatine Henry I. Even when Ezzo's family ceased to be count palatines, Cochem remained connected to the title of count palatine.
In 1294, king Adolf of Nassau pawned the castle and the city of Cochem as well as the surrounding imperial property of about 50 villages to Boemund I of Trier in order to pay for his coronation as German emperor.

Cochem is one of our favorite towns along the Mosel, and also one of the main tourist areas.
Strategically placed high on a hill on a curve of the river, Cochem's 1000 year old Reichsberg Castle has a commanding view of the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, the castle was completely destroyed by the French in 1689 and was rebuilt in the 1800s.

We were in Berkastel and Zell on the Friday of the weekend and Cochem the Saturday and nothing was closed.
Cochem is a nice town to use as your base for this area.
I would do Cochem (as a base) two nights and Trier one night, but you will need the better part of a day if you are to go up to the Coliseum, see the Roman Baths, tour the Roman Gate, see the marvelous cathedrals and wander the old town into the evening.

This castle is very nice and sits majestically on the hillside, overlooking Cochem.

Sorry I wasn't able to update my journal yesterday; Ricardo and Karin, my hosts here in Cochem, are literally keeping me so busy with fun stuff to do that we literally ran out of time to go to the internet cafe yesterday.
Cochem has turned out to be one of the most charming towns I've ever had the pleasure of visiting; quaint yet exciting, touristy yet friendly, stunningly beautiful views from just about every corner of the entire city.
I'll be spending the next five days in Munich, in fact, staying with a professional photographer named Sebastian and drinking with a bunch of ex-pats I met on the internet while still in Chicago.

Depending on road conditions and your driving style it's only a 40 to 45 minute drive from Cochem to the Rhein and a 2-3/4 or 3 hour drive from the Rhein to Rothenburg.
While in Cochem, you might enjoy a cruise upriver to Beilstein (1 hour each way), and you ought to walk up to Reichsburg Castle for the view - and catch the falconry show there if it's convenient.
I have been about 10 times in the last 20 years since highschool and have stayed within the walls and outside the walls of the city.
