		Ecology Habitat This cochoa is found in tropical lower and upper montane rain forest between 900 and 3,000 m (Kuroda 1933_1936, MacKinnon and Phillipps 1993) where it normally frequents the lower and middle storey within the forest (Andrew 1985, SvB), sometimes moving higher (Delacour 1947, MacKinnon 1988, Tobias and Phelps 1994).
		Threats The Javan Cochoa is one of (now) four threatened members of the suite of 20 bird species that are entirely restricted to the "Java and Bali Forests Endemic Bird Area", threats and conservation measures in which are profiled by Sujatnika et al.
		More surveys, especially of areas that historically held the species, are needed to assess the amount of suitable habitat and then to confirm the presence and abundance of the cochoa.

		My first 4 days were partly spoilt by rain, said to be unseasonally heavy (causing floods in Bangkok), but the next 4 days were fine.
		Quiet morning on Km 37.5 trail: another obliging Green Cochoa, a female Purple in flight and a good party at 11.30 with White-necked Laughingthrush and White-browed Shrike-babbler.
		White-tailed Robin Cinclidium leucurum 1 on the road early morning and 1 at Km 34.5 trail, Doi Inthanon on 16th.

		Green Peafowl, Javan Plover, Pink-headed Fruit Dove, Sunda Coucal, Javan Frogmouth, Javan Trogon, Javan Cochoa, Sunda Thrush and the incomparable Bali Myna.
		This species does not occur on Java and was presumably an escaped bird that had managed to find a most congenial home in the montane forest.
		From all this, it is hard to single out particular highlights, but the Javan Cochoa, Sunda Thrushes, Bali Mynas, and of course the pack of Dholes, take a lot of beating.

	Thailand Trip Report
		We decided to walk the km 37.5 jeep trail, in the hope of seeing cochoas, but while we heard Purple Cochoa calling, it was too far away to see it.
		Rachen often sees Purple Cochoas here in May, when they are singing and easier to find, but no sign in the late morning heat, so we walked back the way we had come in, seeing Rufous-winged Fulvetta and Golden Babbler on the way.
		There was another Purple Cochoa calling from a little further down the trail, and Rachen duly found it, a male, perched among some thick branches near the trunk.

	Birdwatching Trip Report from Northern Vietnam
		Tam Dao, a hill station only 2 hours from Hanoi where several good species can be found such as Purple Cochoa purpurea and Green Cochoa C.
		Also, several leeches were present there, and while checking what this Pale-footed Bush Warbler Cettia pallidipes was making such a fuss about, I discovered that there was a big snake lying beside the trail.
		In the afternoon we visited the ‘waterfall’ that did not hold much water, but a beautiful White-capped Water Redstart Chaimarrornis leucocephalus and some Sultan Tits Melanochlora sultanea were nice.
