Cochrane (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Star Trek fictional universe, the cochrane is a unit used to measure the subspace distortion of a subspace field.
In the measurement of warp fields — subspace fields of one cochrane or greater — the number of cochranes is equal to the velocity in multiples of the speed of light that the field could move an object.
Fractions of cochranes (most commonly the millicochrane, one one-thousandth of a cochrane) are often used to measure lesser subspace fields generated by such spatially distorting devices as tractor beams, deflector shields, and synthetic gravity field generators.

Zefram Cochrane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Star Trek universe, World War III lasted only a few short months, (a nuclear war must be short in order to prevent annihilation of the species) 600 million people perished in the nuclear disaster.
Cochrane was played by Glenn Corbett in the episode Metamorphosis of Star Trek: The Original Series and by James Cromwell in the film Star Trek: First Contact.
Cochrane and the rest of the humans then raid the Vulcan ship, kill its remaining crew, and steal its technology, claiming it for the greater good of Earth (it is unknown whether the Terran Empire already exists by this point).

Star Trek Lives - Personnel - Zefram Cochrane
Cochrane became one of history's most renowned scientist when he revolutionized space travel in 2063 with the invention of the warp drive, making faster-than-light travel possible.
Cochrane's motivation for building the Phoenix had been purely commercial, and he was uncomfortable with the fame and adulation that was subsequently his, but he later realized that it was his individuality that made this extraordinary achievement possible.
Zefram Cochrane disappeared from Alpha Centauri in 2117 at the age of 87 and is presumed to have died in space.

 Star Trek Technology
All warp field effects are created via the use of superconducting Cochrane coils, which are wound according to the complex topological patterns defined by Impulsor Calculus, the branch of mathematics developed by Zephram Cochrane to express the new kinematics and mechanics resulting from his successful unification of gravity with the electro-strong-weak force of quantum physics.
On a purely theoretical level, Cochrane was able to establish a new understanding of the term velocity by demonstrating an intriguing difference in the continuum profiles of moving objects versus those stationary relative to the observer.
Generations after Cochrane, the ability of the space/time continuum to store such information-laden "memories" would be used by Dr. Carol Marcus to establish the theoretical basis for the long suspected existence of morphogenetic fields, and would lead her to attempt the exploitation of this phenomena via the "Genesis" technology.

Zefram Cochrane was a human scientist in the 21st century, an eccentric genius, and the inventor of warp drive on Earth.
Cochrane's cryptic remark referred to the involvement of the 24th century Federation starship USS Enterprise-E and a Borg sphere, which both traveled back in time, but was largely shrugged off by his audience as a result of his tendency toward intoxication.

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and First Contact (#8 in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race.
Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before." --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the DVD edition.
While "Star Trek: First Contact" rewrites too much of the original TV series' history--a debilitating addiction the current production people can't seem to shake--it delivers a rollicking adventure that is more in keeping with Captain Kirk's episodes than any other "TNG" film.

There were only two ways for "classic Trek" cast members to appear in a movie with the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation: either Capt. Kirk and his contemporaries would have to be very, very old, or there would be some time travel involved in the plot.
Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and this one (number eight in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race.
Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot.

There are the occasional flaws, notably Cochrane’s “Star Trek” line which makes the skin crawl, as well as the missed opportunity to explore the body-horror aspect of being assimilated (besides a poke in the eye), but my major quibble with the screenplay is a scene that most people praise to high heaven.
These two creative mistakes have had much to do with the decline of Star Trek, and both of them can be traced back to this film, which is perhaps the one flspot on its otherwise untarnished reputation.
