Cockchafer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cockchafer or "May bug", as it is colloquially called, is a European beetle of the family of the dung beetles, the Scarabaeidae.
The cockchafer should not be confused with the similar European Chafer (Rhizotrogus majalis), which has a completely different life cycle, nor with the June Beetles (Phyllophaga spp.), which are native to North America, nor with the Summer Chafer (or "European June Bug", Amphimallon solstitiale), which emerges in June and has a two-year life cycle.
In 1320, for instance, cockchafers were brought to court in Avignon and sentenced to withdraw within three days onto a specially designated area, otherwise they'd be outlawed.

Then he flew down with her from the tree, and placed her on a daisy, and she wept at the thought that she was so ugly that even the cockchafers would have nothing to say to her.

HMS Cockchafer was a Dapper class gunboat with both steam and sail propulsion.
The ship was chiefly famous for her part in the 'Cockchafer Affair' at Swatow, 1868, and also gave her name to Cockchafer Island in the Yangtze Kiang (Worcester 1960, 205).
The vessel was recommissioned after the Swatow incident, and was still on station early in 1872, but by September that year ceased to be listed, because it had been sold to the Telge Northing Co. at Shanghai (presumably for scrap, since these boats did not have a long life-span).
