A hat with the brim turned, like that of a bishop, dean, etc. It is also applied to the chapeau bras, and the military full-dress hat, pointed before and behind, and rising to a point at the crown, the chapeaù à cornu.

The wide-brimmed hats worn by the Cavaliers in England and the Musketeers in France in the 1600s were impressive, but not very practical.
The tricorne, a hat cocked on three sides, was worn by gentlemen and courtiers throughout Europe for most of the eighteenth century, until French fashion introduced the bicorne, the signature hat of Napoleon.

Men wore hats in the form of caps or hoods in ancient times, but women favoured veils and wimples until the late Middle Ages.
Hats have often served ceremonial functions, sometimes symbolizing the office or rank of the wearer.
This type of headwear is seen today in the hats and caps worn by soldiers and sailors, in the bishop's mitre, the cardinal's scarlet hat, the priest's biretta, and the scholar's mortarboard.

 Enlisted Man's Hat
The dress version of this hat was decorated with a leather cockade and white laced strap, a white deer's tail, a strip of fl bear's fur running over the top, and white worsted trim around the brim.
However, in the 18th century the proper gesture between gentlemen was a low bow accompanied by a sweeping removal of the hat.
Upon the introduction of the round hat, it was soon discovered that the old-fashioned doffing of the hat quickly broke down the stiff, narrow brim, so the abbreviated gesture became the preferred one.
