An integral part of this story is the opening of a new Company-Government town at Coco Solo which for the several decades spanning the two World Wars was one of the bastions of the United States Navy's forces guarding the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal.
The quarters at Coco Solo do not require extensive renovation and they can be made available for occupancy at a rapid rate.

Coco Solo was a United States Navy submarine base established in 1918 on the Atlantic Ocean (northwest) side of the Panama Canal Zone, near Colón, Panama.
Coco Solo was not a townsite with winding roads or dozens of streets - in fact, the layout was fairly simple and there was very little chance of getting lost in it.

 Naval Station Coco Solo Photo Album
The Coco Solo Naval Reservation was officially established by Executive Order on April 9, 1920, "to the uses and purposes of a naval reservation, to be under the control of the Secretary of the Navy.
Construction of the original Coco Solo Submarine Base began as early as 1919, during which $630,627.39 was expended by The Panama Canal from an appropriation of the Navy Department.
One section, nearest the Navy entrance, was parallel to the main road that leads to PCC entrance to Coco Solo at the far end.

 Coco Montoya
Coco Montoya uses blues as a blasting off point for his emotional, soulful music on his new CD Dirty Deal, which will be released on Alligator on January 16, 2007.
Coco first met Paul Barerre and Little Feat at a blues festival and according to Barerre, “Coco’s playing was inspirational to me - great tone and attitude.” The band invited Montoya to their annual Feat Festival in Jamaica two years in a row.
Coco is currently recording a new album with producer Paul Barrere of Little Feat, to be released by Alligator Records this summer.

I then went to my Coco Solo township map and reviewed the photo of the week from April 2001 which is an aerial of Coco Solo.
This is in fact the old Coco Solo Chapel that was built by the Navy when Coco Solo was a Naval base.
When the town of Coco Solo was turned over to the Canal Zone Government, this chapel came with the real estate.

During World War II, Coco Solo additionally served as a Naval Aviation Facility housing a squadron of P-38 Lightning aircraft.
From the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, Coco Solo was utilized by the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Army as a residential and administrative location supporting operations at the nearby Galeta Island facility.
After the return of the Panama Canal to Panamanian Control in 1999, U.S. Military activity ceased at both Colo Solo and Galeta Island.

The word was out that the Captain was sailing under sealed orders and that we would not know where we were heading until we were out to sea and he opened his orders.
