	Coco Solo
		An integral part of this story is the opening of a new Company-Government town at Coco Solo which for the several decades spanning the two World Wars was one of the bastions of the United States Navy's forces guarding the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal.
		The quarters at Coco Solo do not require extensive renovation and they can be made available for occupancy at a rapid rate.
		The Coco Solo area is located about five miles from the Cristobal piers and four miles by road from the center of Margarita.

	Naval Station Coco Solo Photo Album
		The Coco Solo Naval Reservation was officially established by Executive Order on April 9, 1920, "to the uses and purposes of a naval reservation, to be under the control of the Secretary of the Navy.
		Construction of the original Coco Solo Submarine Base began as early as 1919, during which $630,627.39 was expended by The Panama Canal from an appropriation of the Navy Department.
		One section, nearest the Navy entrance, was parallel to the main road that leads to PCC entrance to Coco Solo at the far end.

	Coco Montoya
		Coco Montoya uses blues as a blasting off point for his emotional, soulful music on his new CD Dirty Deal, which will be released on Alligator on January 16, 2007.
		Coco first met Paul Barerre and Little Feat at a blues festival and according to Barerre, “Coco’s playing was inspirational to me - great tone and attitude.” The band invited Montoya to their annual Feat Festival in Jamaica two years in a row.
		Coco is currently recording a new album with producer Paul Barrere of Little Feat, to be released by Alligator Records this summer.

		I then went to my Coco Solo township map and reviewed the photo of the week from April 2001 which is an aerial of Coco Solo.
		This is in fact the old Coco Solo Chapel that was built by the Navy when Coco Solo was a Naval base.
		When the town of Coco Solo was turned over to the Canal Zone Government, this chapel came with the real estate.

	Coco Solo Information
		During World War II, Coco Solo additionally served as a Naval Aviation Facility housing a squadron of P-38 Lightning aircraft.
		From the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, Coco Solo was utilized by the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Army as a residential and administrative location supporting operations at the nearby Galeta Island facility.
		After the return of the Panama Canal to Panamanian Control in 1999, U.S. Military activity ceased at both Colo Solo and Galeta Island.

		SS-154, U.S.S. was launched 31 March 1923, at the Quincy, Massachusetts yard of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp. She was commissioned on 31 December 1924, under the command of Lieutenant C.E. Braine, Jr.
		She remained at Coco Solo for the next two years.
		She returned to Coco Solo on 2 February to prepare for transfer to Australia with her division.

		Between February and November 1941 she operated along the New England coast, with two trips to St. Georges, Bermuda.

		On or about March 1, 1942, the USS Griffin and the six Submarines making up Submarine Division 53 transited the Panama Canal from Coco Solo to the Pacific Ocean and passed on out to sea pass the site where 46 good Submariners on the S-26 had just lost their lives 5 weeks earlier.
		The word was out that the Captain was sailing under sealed orders and that we would not know where we were heading until we were out to sea and he opened his orders.

	The keel of USS S-46 (SS-157) was laid down on 23 February 1921
		Arriving at the submarine base at Coco Solo on 26 September 1925, the submarine commenced a schedule of local operations, both from Coco Solo and from Balboa, which were interrupted only for semi-annual extended training cruises and annual fleet problems in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.
		In the spring of 1936, after participating in Fleet Problem XVII, the submarine returned to Coco Solo, where she had again been homeported.
		Still in Submarine Division 11, USS S-46 remained based at Coco Solo through the end of the decade, operating on a schedule similar to that of her first tour in the Panama Canal Zone.
