CocoRosie, however, have danced around the inherent tweeness of the record’s genesis, catching the freakier vibe that seems to have been floating around lately, the one that fantastic new records by Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsome have been tuning into.
CocoRosie seem to totally lack a sense of decorum; an idea that there might be limitations to the topics suitable for a pop song, especially as sung by two charming girls with an acoustic guitar.
The lack of restraint extends to musical traditions as well, as they exploit sounds ranging from opera to gospel as a means to their artistic ends.

 SPIN.com: CocoRosie
That's what listening CocoRosie is like: The Casady sisters create a cross-cultural experiment (Parisian and American) in genre dipping (blues and experimental hip-hop) that, at first, sounds completely batty and sort of irritating, but, after a while, it creeps into your heart and becomes by turns haunting and entertaining.
CocoRosie's first album, La Maison de Mon Reve (The House of My Dream) was written and recorded in a brief period of time by siblings Sierra and Bianca Casady, American ex-pats reunited in Paris.
CocoRosie sometimes sounds like their tracks were dug up from phonograph records laid down in the '20s, with elements of old American spirituals recorded at the lowest fidelity possible.

CocoRosie beyond cult status, just shard after shard of fractured melody that burrows deep into the subconscious.
Noah's Ark retrenches CocoRosie in their signature sound and gives us a glimpse of their indubitably eccentric future.
CocoRosie are clearly talented when they keep things focused; fact is, though, that Noah’s Ark is so steeped in its own random, garbled universe that it makes for a frustrating, unrewarding listen.

Junkmedia: CocoRosie : La Maison de Mon Reve
CoCoRosie is two eccentric sisters with a taste for banging pots and pans, cheap drum loops, cheaper guitar plucking, and a lot of love for Billie Holiday.
This is an album full of what Tom Waits has called "that crumbling beauty" - the street beauty of the wandering woman who praises her own independence while singing the saddest, loneliest love songs to the man who threw her out.
The crash of junkyard melodies, swampland field recordings, and feminine mysteries are likely going to make it strangely difficult for CocoRosie to attract listeners, but those of us who get hooked to the brilliant, sleepy-headed poetics and alienated sexuality of CocoRosie aren't going to easily forget this tremendous debut album.

COCOROSIE La Maison De Mon Rêve
The density of CocoRosie’s songs is the fruit of the chemistry that exists between the two sisters.
The melodies have the kind of innocence and sweetness of little girls’ playground songs, the guitar lines are almost too plain to be taken seriously, and the approximative beats and noises found scattered here and there only accentuate the amateurish feel of this record.
CocoRosie’s lyrics are as perverse as they appear innocent on the surface, with tortuous tales of love, faith, devotion or sex splattered all over By Your Side, Jesus Loves Me, Tahiti Rain Song or Lyla, and it rapidly becomes difficult to resist their little universe becoming yours, if only for a moment.

The packaging of Noah's Ark, CocoRosie's second and newest album, is at least two kinds of jarring.
If La maison is the story of two sisters and a city, Noah's Ark, recorded in pieces during CocoRosie's 2004 tour, is a documentary of meetings with said peers, of collaborations in barns and hotel rooms and studios.
As evidenced by their tours with Bright Eyes, TV on the Radio, and Blonde Redhead, CocoRosie are quite the thing in the world of soft hearts and too much eyeliner.

An enchanting debut, CocoRosie's La Maison de Mon Rêve is a dreamy yet challenging confection of found sounds, folk-blues, trip-hop, girlish pop, and experimental recording and production techniques.
The Casady sisters' breathy, slightly different, but equally lovely vocals circle each other atop delicately plucked and strummed acoustic guitars, chirping birds, and fractured beats, making for a sound that is hard to define outside of its own beauty and creativity.
A strong Billie Holiday influence colors the sisters' vocals, particularly on La Maison de Mon Rêve's most accessible songs, but even then, CocoRosie isn't so much aping Lady Day as it is invoking her style in unique ways.

 audiography: Theme: 100 (CocoRosie - Noah's Ark)
CocoRosie's sophomore album, Noah's Ark, was the natural progression you'd expect from this quirky sister duo.
Still using the lo-fi, folky sound of their debut, this album amps it up with something more playful while not losing the emotional punch of the more mellow songs.
The music's a combination of many elements creating CocoRosie's sound, but even with human beatboxing, toys and harps it's still the vocals - whether it's Sierra revealing her operatic training and jazz-influenced singing or Bianca's childlike voice - that make CocoRosie distinct, separating them from the rest and making Noah's Ark a true listening experience.

 Noah's Ark - CocoRosie - Music Downloads
After hearing Noah's Ark, any concerns about CocoRosie becoming too tasteful or straightforward after the widespread critical acclaim for their debut album, La Maison de Mon Reve, can be put to rest.
If anything, the album errs in the opposite direction: alternately rambling and hypnotic, it's much more somber and insular (despite the presence of such kindred spirits as Devendra Banhart and Antony of Antony & the Johnsons) than the duo's subversively angelic-sounding debut.
Indeed, the more natural moments on Noah's Ark are often the best: the title track, "South 2nd," and "The Sea Is Calm" all put the focus on the Casady sisters' delicate singing and playing.
