The coconut palm, a tropical crop, is widely distributed throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific region.
The main economic products derived from the coconut palm are the fruits or nuts, the copra, which is the dried solid endosperm of meat of the nut, the edible oil extracted from the copra, and desiccated coconut for which the endosperm is ground before drying.
Coconut plays an important role in sustaining fragile ecosystems in island and coastal communities and is used as a source of food, drink, fuel, animal feed and shelter.

Silent witnesses of long forgotten adventures and conquest, the coconut palm trees are as much part of the islands as they are part of the Polynesian myth.

If a coconut tree is uprooted due to strong windstorms the crown part of it then turns up and becomes vertical and new roots come at the base of this crown if proper provision of good nursery soil is made near this part.

In the Khabar al-Lamu, a chronicle of Lamu, the introduction of the coconut palm on the Lamu archipelago (present day Kenya) is attributed to Arab settlers, who came by way of India in the 7th century A.D. (Hichens 1938).
Pemba tradition credits the introduction of the coconut palm to the Wadiba, who according to Gray (1954, 1962) hailed from the Maldive Islands, which were known to 14th century Arab geographers as the Diba Islands.

The coconut is broadly adapted to the tropics.
The coconut is seldom or ever planted for its ecological roles, yet, because of the vast areas of the tropics covered by coconut plantations, the coconut does play an important part ecologically.

Introduction: A Coconut Palm in Missouri
This analogy was a favorite of my sensei, a man who knows little about South Pacific flora and who learned more than he wanted to know about Februarys in Missouri during his years of living there, but who knows a great deal about the bujutsu of Japan.
These arts, he suggested, when they are transported into the alien culture of the modern world, face almost precisely the same perils as that tropical coconut transplanted so rudely into a frosty yard in Missouri.
And most importantly, both the koryu and the coconut have been dropped into an environment that is, at best indifferent to their survival; at worst it is openly hostile.
