The magic resurfaced with the promise of its sequel in 1988’s “Cocoon: The Return,” but it didn’t capture the power and originality of the original.
Above the sci-fi and humor present, “Cocoon” is about age, aging and what it’s like looking at the end of one’s life as well as what it would be like if there were choices that really could be made.
While this might alarm some, Ben and the boys discover that the pool the cocoons are being temporally stored in has regenerative powers that seem to be reversing the problems associated with aging. /cocoon_dvd.htm   (737 words)

 Jessica Tandy
The beginning of the 1970s saw a resurgence in her film career, with character roles in The World According to Garp, Best Friends, Still of the Night (all 1982) and The Bostonians (1984), and the hit film Cocoon (1985), opposite Cronyn, with whom she reteamed for *Batteries not included (1987) and Cocoon: The Return (1988).
She made her American film debut in The Seventh Cross (1944), and appeared in The Valley of Decision (1945), The Green Years (1946, as Cronyn's daughter!), and Forever Amber (1947).

Cocoon & Cocoon: The Return - DVD Review
Cocoon takes a simple, pseudo-philosophical question—what price eternal youth?—and surrounds it with some lame “comedy” antics and now dated sci-fi effects and cheesy synthesizer music (the montage set to Michael Sembello’s “Gravity” is priceless kitsch).
For one thing, the entire cast returns (though Dennehy wisely drops by for only a moment to say hello), and they continue to give it their all, as though they were in a better movie than they are.
There is a serious reconsideration, though, of the choice the characters made at the end of the first film, and the sincerity of their performances is at times quite moving. /cocoon.htm   (677 words)

At the end of "Cocoon," some senior citizens were lifted into the sky by a beam of light from a hovering spacecraft and taken to live on a planet where nobody ever got tired, and nobody ever grew old.
The movie lacks the creative energy of the first one, in which the discovery of the alien "cocoons" created genuine tension, and there was such joy in the scenes where the old men (Brimley, Ameche and Hume Cronyn) were suddenly made young again.
In a way, both "Cocoon" pictures consider the same dilemma that the angels struggled with in Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire": Is it better to live forever as a spirit who can feel nothing, or for a finite time as a creature who can breathe and hurt and die? /apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19881123/REVIEWS/811230301/1023   (787 words)

John Corigliano was unhappy with his experience on the film (and many of his cues in the final version are suspiciously short), and didn't return to movie scoring until his Oscar winning work on The Red Violin, where he was allowed unusual control over his music and its use in the film.
The film was a boxoffice dud but was lovingly made, with terrific ILM effects including a robot spider that looked like it crawled off the cover of a 50s sci-fi magazine.
Though the film has been all too little seen since, luckily the soundtrack was eventually made available, first as a Sonic Atmospheres LP and later as a Bay Cities CD. /articles/2003/21_Aug---Not_Even_Nominated_Part_Six.asp   (4255 words)
