Cocos Island and its surrounding rocks are the only emergent islands of the Cocos Plate, one of the minor tectonic plates.
Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, it is admired by scuba divers for its populations of Hammerhead sharks, rays and dolphins.

Although the Cocos (Keeling) islands were discovered in 1609 by Capt. William Keeling of the East India Company, they remained uninhabited until 1826, when the first settlement was established on the main atoll by an Englishmen, Alexander Hare, with a group of followers, predominantly of Malay origin.
In 1857 the islands were annexed to the Crown; in 1878 responsibility was transferred from the Colonial Office to the Government of Ceylon, and in 1886 to the Government of the Straits Settlements.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Council, established as the elected body of the Cocos Malay community in July 1979, advises the Administrator on all issues affecting the Territory.

It seems that it’s been referred to as the Cocos Islands for centuries (I’m still not sure why), but the name Keeling in parentheses is used to distinguish it from the other Cocos Islands in the world.
South Island is the inhabited one and refers to a collection of smaller islands.
