Topic: Cocoyam

In the News (Thu 31 May 12)

Food-Info.net : Tropical roots and tubers : Cocoyam
Cocoyams are found as an important crop only in warm, humid forest areas because of their need for high annual rainfall and a long wet season.
Cocoyam flour has the added advantage that it is highly digestible and so is used for invalids and as an ingredient in baby foods.
Taro (a variant of cocoyam) is the traditional staple in the Pacific Islands, where it is made into a series of food products similar to those described for cassava.

Variability and germplasm loss in the Cameroon national collection of cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott)
The collected germplasm was evaluated in Cameroon during the 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992 cocoyam growing seasons.
The highest variability, as indicated by the coefficient of variation, was recorded in Type II population for cormel yield per plant, indicating that this population is the most heterogeneous for this parameter.
The Type III plants exhibited the lowest variability for number of leaves per plant while the three cocoyam types were distinct for plant height and single cormel weight.

The potential of peels of mango, plantain, cocoyam and pawpaw as diets for growing snails (Archachatina marginata)
The peels of the different fruits had similar composition but were considerable lower in DM, crude protein and ash content compared with the pawpaw leaves.
There are recent research findings on the use of pawpaw leaf and fruit, cocoyam tubers and mango fruits for feeding snails (Imevbore 1990; Awah 1992) but there is a paucity of information on the use of the peel of these crops in the diet of snails.
Hence this study was conducted to investigate growth and carcass analysis of snails fed peels of plantain, cocoyam, mango and pawpaw.

The usable parts in both species are the subterranean tuberous stems which, in the case of the latter, contain between 15 and 39 percent of carbohydrates, 2 to 3 percent of protein and 70 to 77 percent of water; both have a nutritional value comparable to the potato and are probably easier to digest.
In one related species, the cocoyam, with a possibly wider variation, all the clones are considered as a single species.
Cytological studies of a world collection may lead, as in the case of the cocoyam, to the establishment of natural groups of cultivars and may also serve as a basis for genetic improvement.
