A group whose distinctly ethereal and gossamer sound virtually defined the enigmatic image of the record label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979.
In late 1983, ex-Drowning Craze bassist Simon Raymonde joined the band to record the EP The Spangle Maker; as time wore on, Raymonde became an increasingly essential component of Cocteau Twins, gradually assuming an active role as a writer, arranger, and producer.
A burst of creativity followed, as the Twins issued three separate EPs -- Aikea-Guinea, Tiny Dynamine, and Echoes in a Shallow Bay -- in 1985, trailed a year later by the acoustic Victorialand album, the Love's Easy Tears EP, and The Moon and the Melodies, a collaborative effort with minimalist composer Harold Budd.

So the Cocteau Twins are one of my favorite groups and a true inspiration for me when it comes to writing, but having gotten into them far too late, I never had occasion to see them play.

The Cocteau Twins, for those unfamiliar, are a trio whose music largely served to define the term "ethereal," though they could occasionally surprise with a production sucker punch or two.
This is also probably the most melodic one-song "snapshot" of the Twins' sound: while many Twins songs seem to drift forth out of your stereo like some kind of thick sonic fogbank, "Heaven Or Las Vegas" sounds kind of like an unusually aggressive ABBA single playing at about 41 RPM.
This is one of those classic Twins tracks that seem to tiptoe quietly around your head before suddenly and dramatically erupting from a delicate whisper to a full-on volcanic roar.

Following a period where Cocteau Twins began to sound like themselves (rather than an Associates/Banshees sounding band) where they produced such great releases as Pearly Dewdrops Drops, Treasure, Aikea Guinea & Love's Easy Tears, they decided to change their sound (though the acoustic elements of songs like Orange-Appled gave a clue).
Victorialand is one of the most ambient of Cocteau Twins' releases, alongside the follow-up 'The Moon & the Melodies' (released under the 'Budd-Fraser-Guthrie-Raymonde'-moniker)- it is blissedout more than chilled out, the latter term much more a lazy marketing tool for slightly mellow lift muzak.
