Because a gentlemen's code of honor characterized early life and conduct at the College, the exact date by which a formal honor system had developed is unknown, although it certainly had emerged by 1779, the year often claimed for the honor system's official establishment, when the College was reorganized under Thomas Jefferson's leadership.
When a student is accused of violating the Honor Code, the Honor Council for the academic unit in which the accused student is enrolled as a degree candidate shall hear and determine the case according to these procedures.

Chairperson may assign without a hearing by the Honor Commission, unless the accused admits that he or she has violated the Honor Code and waives his or her right to a hearing; such a student then receives failure in the course if he/she is a first-time offender.
The person found to have violated the Honor Code who as failed to cooperate with the Honor Commission or who has lied during his/her hearing, or who has committed a blatantly premeditated violation shall be subject to a heavier penalty than would otherwise be applied.
The Honor Pledge is as follows: "I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid, nor have I witnessed a violation of the Honor Code." At the end of each task every student shall write out and sign the Honor Pledge.

AUSTIN, Texas—An honor code outlining standards of integrity and civility has been adopted by The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of the university, said today (April 29).
