Artistic gymnastics consists of prescribed sets of events, such as the vault, which are scored separately by judges to determine individual winners.
Rhythmic gymnastics consists of several events in which the gymnasts use objects such as balls and hoops while performing choreographed routines, which are scored separately and then added together to determine an overall winner.
In ancient Greece, three distinct programs of gymnastic exercise were developed: one for the maintenance of good physical condition, another for military training, and a third as part of the conditioning regimen for athletes.

Once a gymnast achieves height in her tumbling and gymnastics elements, she must be able to control herself both in the air and on the landings.
During the pre-flight from the springboard to the horse, the gymnast must demonstrate a rise in the height of his body after pushing off of the horse, travel the minimum distance (2.5 m) and not deviate from the extended axis of the horse.
The gymnast is also required to perform a skill in which both hands release and regrasp the bars, commonly referred to as a release move.

Depending on the type of vault selected by the gymnast, she must meet the requirements specified in the Code of Points, the official text giving the relevant value of each skill per formed.
The gymnast goes from bar to bar and does different swings, handstands, and at the end dismounts and tries to "stick" the landing.
The gymnast must use acrobatic, gymnastics and dance movements to create high points, or peaks in the exercise, consisting of two or more elements performed in a series.

Every gymnast will be able to strive for a perfect 10.0 in execution, whatever their level or ability, and if you know your tariff, or the difficulty of your routine all you need to do is deduct that from the final score to see how close you were to the perfect 10.0 on execution.
The gymnast are not doing skills that are any more difficult than were being done in the 80s, yet the FIG continually tries to push the limits of gymnastics to the point where it looks like a circus show.
The gymnasts are not puppets for the FIG.

Self selection for gymnastics and training may result in a decreased intensity of growth, delayed onset of the symptoms of sexual maturation and altered rhythm of the consecutive stages of development (Ziemilska, 1985).
The highly trained gymnasts were able to produce higher levels of trunk velocity on both the front and back saltos, higher amounts of longitudinal rotation on the twisting jump and produce a faster v-sit action.

Like the proposed AG code, the post-2000 rhythmic COP awards difficulty (while execution and especially artistry are undervalued), with the result being expressionless and frequently static routines—from even the top gymnasts—as they strive to build the highest difficulty score possible.
Top rhythmic gymnasts (and I'm talking the top five or so) are finally beginning to cope with the new COP, but it is still common place in a RG final for gymnasts to fumble and drop apparatus, incorrectly perform elements and miss the end of the music and still be awarded medals.
While the gymnastics community needs to embrace the ever-changing nature and demands of the sport, allowing a COP which rewards difficulty at the expense of artistry and originality is clearly a step back, not forward.

Landing Success Rate During the Artistic Gymnastics Competition of the 2000 Olympic Games: Implications for Improved ...
Gymnasts encounter a wide range of velocities, surfaces, segment configurations and visual conditions prior to contact that influence their ability to bring their total body momentum to zero with a single placement of their feet.
Once the gymnast departs from the apparatus, the flight time, body angular momentum and linear momentum of the total body center of mass during flight are determined.
In most cases, gymnasts landing vaults tend to be translating forward and rotating forward or translating backward and rotating backward when initiating contact with the landing surface, whereas, gymnasts landing dismounts performed from bars tend to be translating forward and rotating backward.

In the previous code, the display score is derived from dividing the calulated total score by two.

Updates to the NCAA Code in 2007
For example, a gymnast with a combination (on high bar, facing low) of a free hip handstand, giant overshoot to a handstand, toe-on straddle-shoot to catch high ("Chinese sit-up") can now meet the "up to the level of the competition" requirement and the basic release requirements.
However in the NCAA code, as was the case last year, a whole class of Healy-type skills (from uprise, cast, giant, free hip, and stalder) and the uprise 1/2 turn (devalued to C in the JO code this year) have been assigned a D value.
Gymnasts are now required to show jumps or leaps of two different shapes (straight, straddle, pike, wolf, tuck, split, ring, sheep or cat).

The disputed element in McClure's rings performance was, according to the gymnast and his coach, a "Maltese," in which the body is horizontal to the floor and the hips level with the rings.
Gymnasts can also earn "connection bonus" points when a routine has a tricky transition—from a D move to a D move, for example.

FIG was looking to decrease the the stress on the joints (wrists, elbows and shoulders) during vaulting, increase the technical mastery of the current repertoire thereby making it safer to vault, and allowing greater room for variations of the current repertoire.
The transition can generally be made within one day's workout, provided the gymnasts already has a firm grasp of the proper run, preflight, support and postflight for vaulting.
The table requires female gymnasts to almost totally abandon their present techniques for forward and backward handspring vaults, Kasamatsu and Tsukahara vaults.

For almost a year now, we’ve been working on developing the Code of Points in a fashion that would render its readability and application to competitions clear and simple, a Code that would last for many years.
It is important to remember that Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics have inherent differences that we cannot and must not eliminate.
There is, however, a common ground where we can find general principles with identical characteristics for the sole reason that gymnastics, whether Men’s or Women’s, possesses the same biomechanical nature of human movements and as a result, the two groups must have the same values in terms of difficulties.
