Codeine (PIM 140) |
 | | codeine syrup 5 mg/ml; codeine phosphate syrup 5 mg/ml; codeine tablets 15, 30 and 60 mg; codeine phosphate injection 15, 30 and 60 mg/ml (Reynolds, 1989, McEvoy, 1989). |
 | | Codeine is metabolized mainly in the liver where it undergoes 0-demethylation to form morphine, N-demethylation to form norcodeine, and partial conjugation to form glucuronides and sulphates of both the unchanged drug and its metabolites (Moffat, 1986). |
 | | Codeine crosses the placenta and regular use during pregnancy may result in addiction of the foetus leading to withdrawal syndrome in the newborn (irritability, excessive crying, tremors, hyperactive reflexes, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, yawning). |
