The original system of 40K was known as Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader in its first incarnation and was like the original Warhammer Fantasy Battle more of a prelude to a roleplaying system than just a wargame.
A series of army books or Codex followed and gave a complete background for a particular race or branch of the Imperial war machine, and this, along with some of the best background material ever written for a game system as helped keep 40K at the front of the pack.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News: Edginton Lifts Off with “Warhammer 40,000”
Studios is bringing “Warhammer 40,000” back to comic books and given the vastness of the Warhammer universe, it's no surprise the comic, “Damnation Crusage,” is too much for just one writer, so there are two: Dan Abnett and Ian Edginton.
While “Warhammer 40,000: Damnation Crusade” is a collaborative work (writing-wise in addition to the artist) with you and Dan Abnett, you also do a lot of solo comics writing.
“Warhammer 40,000” is a world unto itself, but once you take onboard the parameters you have to work within, it's not as restrictive as it seems.

Warhammer fans will be pleased to hear that the writers managed to do justice to this particular fantasy setting by creating a plausible plot with nice character development and genuinely engaging dialogue.
All of the factions in the game (Space Marines, The Eldar, Forces of Chaos and the Orks) have been painted with great literary skill and they are all very unique and mostly ambivalent when it comes to their moral codex.
Scenes of massive battles truly are spectacular, as often identical units will fight their foes in a different fashion, creating a scene of true chaos and mayhem worthy of the bloody conflicts in the Warhammer universe.
