Final Fight is a side-scrolling fighting game related to the Street Fighter series, where it shares its story and some of the characters.
Final Fight didn't create the side scroller as it had been done before in games such as Double Dragon but Final Fight had huge sprites and superb animation which is why it stood out.
Final Fight has set the standards for side scrolling beat-em-ups but the only real contender to its crown has been the Streets of Rage series.

First Impressions - Final Fight: Streetwise /// Eurogamer
Final Fight: Streetwise certainly comes along at an odd time, and it's pretty odd all round really.
The old Final Fights involved marching from left to right, moving into and out of the screen a bit and fighting streams of enemies in fairly simplistic fashion using weapon pick-ups and basic punch and kick combos.
To be fair, Final Fight: Streetwise is in no way bad - it looks fairly nice, plays nicely and is clearly capable of adapting the classic style to three dimensions with a bit of common sense.

This game is actually not in the series; the original game had nothing to do with Street Fighter, but Capcom USA saw an opportunity to milk their flagship franchise, and translated this game into a Street Fighter tie-in.
The fighting engine was much simpler, with the focus on the game being the many gags as fighters pulled out various objects(such as street signs, ink brushes, planks, umbrellas, and 100-ton mallets) and switched into many costumes(Showgirl Outfits, Masked Wrestlers, and even other Capcom characters) to beat each other up.

Inspired by the two-player clobbering action of Double Dragon, Final Fight took the side-scrolling fighting genre by the ears, yanked its head down, kneed it in the face a few times, then threw a devastating uppercut to its jaw.
The specialized abilities of the three stars were a nice twist on the genre, but the real appeal of Final Fight was the basic, primal joy of beating the mess out of large numbers of villains.
The controls were simple—joystick, jump button, fight button—giving even first-time players the thrill of being the toughest kid on the block.
