Cody and co. are apparently very near an implementation of a utility that will allow people to turn songs acquired through Napster Light (the a la carte service) and Premium (the non-portable subscription service) into unencrypted files.
Cody acknowledged other ways they could change the way they encrypt the content, but he believes these changes would be trivial to circumvent, assuming they do successfully implement the utility they are currently working on.
Cody sees his actions as "ethical," irrespective of legality, and he is willing to "fight the DMCA." He wants to be able to play his lawfully acquired Napster music on Linux.

Neowin previously reported on the work done by Cody Brocious to get iTunes working on Linux; in a soon to be released updated version, Cody and his group have announced plans to support the Napster Music Store as well.
Amazingly, Brocious says the DRM crack could be applied to other stores (MSN Music, Napster, Wall mart) using the WMA file format; "we would have to figure out how to get their license keys, which is a relatively trivial process".
Brocious expects the new version to be released in the coming days.

But in an interview, Brocious said his team has found a way that essentially lets them take the digital rights management (DRM) off the files, using a 2001 hacker's crack of Microsoft's rights management system.
The upshot is that Brocious and his team think they can take the DRM off a Napster purchase, so it can be played on a Linux or Macintosh computer.
Brocious said that once they do finish the de-DRMing tool, it will be released separately from Musik.

In an interview late Friday, one of the program's creators, 17-year-old Pennsylvania high school student Cody Brocious, said the ability to save songs without copy protection was essentially an accident derived from the way Apple's system downloads songs.
Brocious, who has left his most recent development on the software to another programmer, said he hasn't been contacted by Apple and hasn't talked to a lawyer.
Johansen said that two other programmers, Travis Watkins and Brocious, had done much of the work on the Linux software, while he had developed the Windows version.

Brocious was inspired about his project after hearing another programmer had started a web based version of iTunes.

 Billboard PostPlay: Napster DRM Hacked
This first release version of the Musik framework (which is the successor to pymusique written by Cody Brocious - a 17 year old high school student from Pennsylvania- Alex Goodwin and Travis Watkins) for online music store clients is now available to download for free.
Apparently, the team have formulated a method for removing the DRM on WMA files allowing them to play on non-Windows systems and the crack's origins are credited to Beale Screamer's code which was released in late 2001.
After the file is purchased, the utility basically removes the DRM on each song - allowing unrestricted use of the file...The result is that Musik framework will allow people to turn songs legally acquired through the a la carte Napster Light and Premium (the non-portable subscription service) into unencrypted files.
