Topic: The Coen Brothers

In the News (Sat 11 Oct 08)

Coen Brothers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The brothers work so closely and share such a strong vision of what their films are to be that actors say that they can approach either brother with a question and get the same answer.
Their parents, Edward and Rena Coen, were both professors, their father specializing in economics at the University of Minnesota and their mother in art history at St.
The Coen brothers' earlier films (with the exception of Miller's Crossing) made extensive use of wide-angle lenses, which are the preferred lenses of their first cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld.

 Joel and Ethan Coen
The Coens subvert the myth of the suffering playwright with their depiction of Barton Fink as a pompous and self-absorbed author who is out of touch with the very people he claims to write for, and about.
When the Coen brothers draw on their vast intertextual web of references in order to inform their films, as is the case in The Hudsucker Proxy, they are often accused of elitism; of alienating their audience by servicing only their own penchant for in-jokes and obscure allusions.
The Coen brothers' wonderful ear for dialogue, rigid attention to regional re-constructions, inventive approach to the past, in addition to their professional skill and adroit technique has resulted in some of the most enjoyable (and critically worthy) contemporary films.

The Coen brothers may be visually rich, but they take care to craft the intricate, painstakingly realistic dialogue, often in dialect.
The brothers work together equally on all of the jobs but say that they want to spread their names out as not to "…totally dominate the credits." and scare some viewers off.
The Coen brothers are the most original and talented independent directors in the last half of this century.

 O Brother, Where Art Thou?
O Brother is several films in one: a tale of three desperadoes on the lam in rural Mississippi; a blues and country musical; and, allegedly at least, a rewrite of Homer's Odyssey.
The Coen brothers are presenting a concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, US (the site of the original Grand Ole Opry) featuring a lot of famous country/bluegrass performers from the soundtrack of "O Brother Where Art Thou" including Emmylou Harris, Gilian Welch, Alison Krauss, John Hartford, and many more.
The Coen brothers' next project is all set to get under way, a 1930's set crime caper about a chain gang which escapes from prison and legs it across Middle America with the law in hot pursuit.

The Coen brothers express their surprise at the success of "Fargo", coming after the box-office flop of"The Hudsucker proxy", and comment on the nature of independent cinema.
The Coens show a wry, teasing affection for the community in which they grew up, and the film is almost warm in its depiction of this Siberian-looking patch of the United States.
The aim of this paper is to examine how the Coen brothers' and Jarmusch's choice of the musical field as a territory for their reconstructions of the South enables them to collate distinct artistic domains and genres in their representations of "border incidents" between stories, legends and history.

When hitting their best grooves, the Coens’ singular brew of irony, ingenuity, and intoxicating wit bubbles to vivid, satiric life with visual aplomb and top-notch, original writing.
If the Coen brothers are supposed to be slightly cultish in their creations, it only makes sense that they're going to attract a cultish following.

Review | The Coen Brothers by Ronald Bergan
The brothers Coen -- like their work -- do not inspire ambivalence.
After the brothers relent and agree to cooperate with Bergan -- a pretty good story in itself -- the author is told that he will be contacting them through one Alan J. Schoolcraft, who Bergan immediately suspected wasn't a real person.
We not only get a clear, sensitive, yet candid view of the mercurial brothers and their lives, but also a critical look at the films the pair have produced and directed and the places where those films connect with each other as well as their creators.

Leave it to the Coens, though, to call it a remake while infusing it with so much of their own warped, absurdist humor and macabre yet funny imagery that it feels entirely original.
The Coens took the "bones of the plot" and ran with it, transplanting The Ladykillers from London to the Deep South and creating a more active heroine than the porcelain-teacup widow of the original.
The Coens have always equally shared writing, directing and producing, but The Ladykillers is the first of their 11 films on which they share all three credits.

This may be a dumb film at times, but the Coen brothers remember something that's usually forgotten: how some populist, reformist movements of the last century sometimes had a nativist, racist streak.

Throughout all their films, the Coen brothers have struck an uneasy balance between mocking and celebrating rural folk.

Director Joel Coen received much critical praise for his handling of the stylish crime drama "Blood Simple", which marked his directorial debut, and Raising Arizona, a comedy about an unconventional couple whose obsessive desire for a child leads them to redefine the rules of parenthood.
Ethan and his brother previously collaborated on the screenplays for Blood Simple and Raising Arizona, on which they also functioned as producer and director, respectively.
After a film noir and madcap comedy, the Coens were again, according to Ethan, making "a conscious effort not to repeat ourselves" when they understood the writing of Miller's Crossing.

Fametracker :: The Fame Audit :: The Coen Brothers
And yet, the fact is that none of the Coens' pre-Fargo movies is stereotypically "artsy." Most of their movies, in fact, are influenced either by '40s noir films (Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing) or by screwball comedies (Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy).
Because they've made most of their movies outside the Hollywood studio system, they've been lumped in with snootier filmmakers, but their films are actually, for the most part, very crowd-pleasin' and -- theoretically, at least -- accessible to all sorts of audiences.
Joel and Ethan Coen may not be as famous as Francis Ford Coppola or Ridley Scott, but we reckon that -- since they had nothing to do with movies like Jack or Hannibal -- Joel and Ethan Coen are probably fine with that, and probably also sleep a lot better at night.
