An alternate method is to hold both claws close together and dip them in the water; by shoveling motions, the water is forced to rise by capillary action along the fringe of hairs on the lower surfaces of the claws, and the maxillipeds, direct it to the mouth.
Coenobita has a highly developed sensory perception for water; it prefers water of low salinity and it is able to discriminate well between different salinities.
Males of Coenobita Clypeatus are distinguished by the presence of tufts of hair concealing openings on the first segment of the last pair of legs and by the absence of appendages on the abdomen.

Hermit crab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terrestrial hermit crabs begin their lives in the sea but, through a series of moults, develop the ability to breathe air.
Their link with the sea is never entirely broken, however, as hermit crabs carry a small amount of water in their shells at all times to keep their abdomen moist and their modified gills hydrated.
Other species such as Coenobita brevamanus, Coenobita rugosus, Coenobita perlatus or Coenobita cavipes are less common but growing in availability and popularity as pets.

Coenobita violascens was a relatively unknown species to U.S. crabbers before 2003.
We had all seen pictures of C. brevimanus, C. perlatus and C. variabilis from Australia, but never the C. violascens.
To make things even more confusing, it appears that some Coenobita cavipes crabs actually WERE imported into the United States and thus are in fact available as pets.
