Crabzilla.net - Introduction to Land Hermit Crabs
While most species of hermit crabs are aquatic, and can't live very long outside the water, there are a few land-dwelling species.
Most notable among the land dwelling hermit crabs is the family Coenobitidae, which encompases both the genus Coenobita, which contains the land hermit crabs most people keep as pets, and the genus Birgus, the giant coconut crab.
compressus, or Ecuadorians, are found from the far southern coast of California to the Peruvian coast.

All of them are in the genus Coenobita.
The most common type out there is the Caribbean (coenobita clypeatus,) which is also called "PP" for purple pincher due to, you guessed it, its large purple pincher.
The other types are Rugosus "Rug" (rugosus), Strawberry (perlatus), Equadorian or "E" (compressus), Cavipe or "Cav" (cavipes),Indonesian or "Indo" (brevimanus).

 CJO - Abstract
This potential trade-off was investigated in the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita compressus.
Crabs were individually maintained in captivity for a variable period of between 1 and 7 months, during which light or heavy replicates of the preferred shell were available.
compressus results from a balance between the need to grow and the cost of carrying a brittle shell that is not sufficiently water tight.

This is a Coenobita Clypeatus hermit crab or commonly called Purple Pincher (PP) or Purple Claw crab.
The Compressus or Ecuadorian hermit crab, commonly called the E, looks very similar to the ruggie.
The differences are that the Ecuadorian does not have fl marks under the eyes, the stitch marks on the big pincher are not as raised or they are absent all together and they usually have multiple markings on their shield.

Through vegetation analyses in a coastal forest in Costa Rica, we found a significant shift in tree community composition along a gradient away from the coastline; both tree stem densities and species diversity are positively correlated with distance from the coastline.
To determine the potential factors influencing this observed pattern, we investigated the relative effects of seed and seedling predation by both land crabs (Gecarcinus quadratus) and hermit crabs (Coenobita compressus) on seedling establishment and seedling response to different light environments over the course of two wet and dry seasons.
To assess if differential seed dispersal occurs in the study area along the gradient, we described the distribution of seed rain collected in seed traps along the gradient.

Coenobita rugosus (the "tawny hermit crab") is the most recent species of exotic land hermit crab to arrive in the U.S. Identifying them can be quite a challenge but actually it's easy if you know what to look for.
Coenobita rugosus is native to the Pacific islands as well and while most people had heard of them, when the first C. rugosus landed in the U.S., we had a lot of fun trying to identify them.
The eyes are elongated, there can be striping on the sides of the body, and when C. rugosus' shell is too small, like the crab in the middle picture, it will adopt the Ecuadorian habit of crossing two legs over the large claw.

Apparently, the Hermit Crab Association holds annual Crab Conventions, complete with the crowning of each year’s Miss Crustacean, for hermit crab owners and enthusiasts.) Rather, the hermit crab (a catch-all nickname that does not distinguish between several unique species, the most common of which are Coenobita clypeatus and Coenobita compressus) doesn’t have a hard shell.
It has to use other animal’s old shells for protection; as it grows, the hermit crab discards its borrowed digs of a shell and hunts for a newer, larger one.
This justifiable outrage is perhaps the main difference between me and Coenobita clypeatus or Coenobita compressus.
