The legislature called for a county seat to be built,"not more than one mile from the geographic center of said county." Since there was no existing community at the center of the county, appointed commisioners surveyed forty acres, sold lots to the highest bidders, then contracted for a courthouse and jail to be built.
The citizens of the county were not pleased with the location of the county seat, and after the Wellborn courthouse burned in 1851, they demanded that a vote be taken to decide where the seat should be located.
