Most of the county was ceded to Georgia by the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814, though the northern portion was ceded in Jan. 1818 by the Treaty of the Creek Agency.
When Coffee County was created in 1854, it was formed primarily from the region of Telfair County south of the Ocmulgee River, with smaller portions added from Irwin, Clinch, and Ware counties.
Coffee County's seat of government was not served by any railroad for the first four decades of its existence, and the town almost disappeared.

The U.S. Air Force wants Coffee County and its cities to pay millions of dollars to clean up the old county landfill, which is on the property of Arnold Air Force Base.
The military says the county and the cities of Manchester and Tullahoma put hazardous materials in the now-closed Coffee County Landfill during the 17 years it was open, contaminating the groundwater nearby.
County leaders say they have done all that was asked of them, including supplying public water service to residents in the area because of the groundwater pollution.

The history of Coffee County and Pea River are inseperable as many of  the early Indian villages and the first white settlements were located along the banks.
The legislature called for a county seat to be built,"not more than one mile from the geographic center of said county." Since there was no existing community at the center of the county, appointed commisioners surveyed forty acres, sold lots to the highest bidders, then contracted for a courthouse and jail to be built.
The citizens of the county were not pleased with the location of the county seat, and after the Wellborn courthouse burned in 1851, they demanded that a vote be taken to decide where the seat should be located.

Phil Tarpley, 54, served as a math teacher in the district for 34 years, the last 16 of those spent at Coffee County Middle School teaching eighth-grade math, said Dan Brigman, the school's superintendent.
Coffee County District Attorney General Mickey Layne, reached at his home, said investigators told him that Tarpley was charged with aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.
