Shirley Notes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
According to Stemmata Shirleiana, this ancient family appears to have taken its name from Shurley, a manor in the parish of Lingen, near Presteign, in the county of Hereford, but was of Isfield in Sussex, early in the reign of Henry the Eight, their first recorded ancestor in that county, John Shurley, esq.
There are numerous notices of this John Shurley, the cofferer, among the State Papers of the reign of Henry VIII and mentions also of Richard Shurley, bailiff of the town of Ware in Hertfordshire, who, may be his brother.
John Shurley, coffer to the King, died Aug 3, 1527.

William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The crash of the South Sea Company restored Walpole to the highest position, but all he offered to Pulteney was a peerage.
The offer was rejected, but in May 1723 Pulteney agreed to accept the lucrative but insignificant post of cofferer of the household.
However, when he found himself neglected, he opposed the proposition of Walpole to discharge the debts of the civil list, and in April 1725 was dismissed from his sinecure.
