The reasonable assumption with the depiction of ships on town seals is that they show the latest development of that ship because the town wishes to show how ‘modern’ and up-to-date it is. This is not the case with the Lubeck seals.
The actual cog being depicted is an early version of the ship and is closely related to the 9th century Frisian cogs, rather than the 13th century ones which would have been around at the time of the seals use.
The increase in size of the cog over time is also depicted on these seals with an increase in the number of strakes of the ships, the 1256 seal shows a cog with 6 strakes, the 1280 one with 8 strakes.

One can measure ships in terms of overall length, length of the waterline, beam (breadth), depth (distance between the crown of the weather deck and the top of the keelson), draft (distance between the highest waterline and the bottom of the ship) and tonnage.
Until the application of the steam engine to ships in the early 19th century, oars propelled galleys or the wind propelled sailing ships.
Before mechanisation, merchant ships always used sail, but as long as naval warfare depended on ships closing to ram or to fight hand-to-hand, galleys dominated in marine conflicts because of their maneuverability and speed.

The transformation of the cog into a true seagoing trader came not only during the time of the intense merchant exchange between West and East, but also as a direct answer to the closure of the western entrance to the Limfjord.
The need for spacious and relatively inexpensive ships led to the development of the first workhorse of the Hanseatic League, the cog.
Even though there is no evidence that hulk ships descended from the cogs, it is clear that the 14th and 15th centuries witnessed an intense technological interchange of ideas between the two (Crumlin-Pedersen, 2000).

Establishing more truth in true winds
The ship's directional reference frame has zero degrees at the bow of the vessel with angles increasing in a clockwise direction, while the Earth's reference frame has true north corresponding to zero degrees with angles increasing in a clockwise direction.
Differences between COG and heading are also the result of currents, wind, and steering error (Bowditch 1984), and they are greatly reduced when the vessel is moving forward at a moderate or greater speed.
Use of the heading instead of the COG in (A1) is essential because the bow is rarely oriented in the direction of ship motion over the fixed Earth.

The Hanseatic Cog which came to dominate Northern European trade was merely a developed version of the Celtic flat bottomed boat, high sided and heavily built to compensate for the lack of a keel.
Such ships were relatively simple to build, compared with the more complex Nordic types, and because of their substantial beam and flat bottom they were formidable load carriers.
As the cog got larger the flat bottom shrank until it became vestigial and there was little, at first sight, to distinguish the cog from the medieval knarr.
