Cogency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An argument is cogent if and only if the truth of the argument's premises would render the truth of the conclusion probable (i.e., the argument is strong), and the argument's premises are, in fact, true.
Cogency can be considered inductive logic's analogue to deductive logic's "soundness." As an example, consider the following.
The degree of an argument's cogency, then, is a function of the argument's strength.

 Cogency
Suppose you have an argument in which the premises make the conclusion very probably true, but not necessarily true; it might still be a good argument.
Such an argument we call cogent; cogency (that is the noun) is of central importance to inductive logic.
Also like validity, the cogency of an argument can be assessed by examining the form of the argument.

Our cogency monitor is different from firewalls in that it extends significantly beyond firewalls, but is more focused on specified behavior than an intelligent agent is. In particular, cogency monitors add real-time, quality of service, fault tolerance, and security as well as allowing user-added transformations and mappings into BeeHive objects.
The differences are (1) the cogency monitor now queries three different sites for the data and (2) the cogency monitor does not have a daemon that periodically queries the information sources (network etiquette requires that we not flood the Internet search engines).
Additionally, this cogency monitor is able to provide a bounded time limit for which a user has to wait for a response through the use of a deadline.

EETimes.com - Cogency postpones delivery of self-timed logic tools   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The regrouping at Cogency Technology marks a rapid about-face and is a setback for the wide-scale commercial deployment of self-timed logic, which has shown promise in academic research.
Cogency argues that self-timed designs reduce power because circuits only switch when work needs to be done, minimize noise since switching is not performed in lockstep and aid system-on-chip design because stringent synchronization requirements are removed.
Glibbery now admits that Cogency underestimated what it would take to introduce new tools to support a radically different type of design and a new language to support their use.

David Christensen - Putting Logic in its Place: Formal Constraints on Rational Belief - Reviewed by William J. Talbott, ...
In Chapter 3, Christensen uses a series of compelling examples to argue that deductive cogency is not a rational ideal at all.
In rejecting deductive cogency, Christensen breaks with the classical rationalist tradition on the place of logic in epistemology, but he does not break with rationalism about logic itself.
To the advocates of deductive cogency, this deductive argument can be useful in explaining why it would be rational for someone who believes the premises (HM and SH) to believe the conclusion (SM).
