The adverse reactions below, most of which are anticholinergic in nature, have been reported and within each category are listed in order of decreasing severity.
Because of the atropine-like side effects, COGENTIN should be used with caution in pediatric patients over three years of age (see CONTRAINDICATIONS).

COGENTIN injection is a clear solution free of extraneous matter contained in a glass ampoule (2ml benztropine mesylate per ampoule, 1mg/ml).
COGENTIN may be used concomitantly with SINEMET* (carbidopa/ levodopa, MSD), or with levodopa, in which case periodic dosage adjustment may be required in order to maintain optimum response.
COGENTIN should also be used with caution in patients with urinary retention, cardiovascular disease and hepatic or renal impairment.

Cogentin should not be given to treat tardive dyskinesia; it will not help, and it may make the condition worse.
Cogentin should not be given to children under the age of 3; it should be used with caution in older children.

My 16 year old daughter was prescribed cogentin for adverse side effects she experienced while on Abilify.
Cogentin was prescribed to provide relief from the stiffness in the neck and jaw that caused slurred speech while she was coming off abilify.
In our case Cogentin was very effective and left no lasting side effects although it was only used for about two weeks.

After two rounds of botox injections (30 units to 8 sites on 1/12 + 30 more units to 6 sites on 1/25) my ophomologist said that I have not responded the way that I should and therefore she no longer considers me to be a candidate for botox.
She referred me back to the original Neuorolgist who diagnosed me. He has prescribed Cogentin.
So now I am on Cogentin, and have been told to expect it to take at least 6 weeks before we'll know if its working and the rate of efficacy is about 10%.
