 Coginchaug River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coginchaug River is a tributary to the Mattabesset and Connecticut rivers.
The name, Coginchaug, comes from the local Native American name for the Durham area, and it was the original name for the town.
It has been said to mean "The Great Swamp", and is a reference to the meadows found in the central part of town.

Water temperatures are still moderate, with the mainstem at 66 degrees F (19 C), the Farmington River at Rainbow at 64 degrees F (18 C), and the Salmon River at Leesville at 63 degrees F (17 C).
We reported blueback herring in the river in last week’s weekly report and reports of large stripers in the river are now common.

The name "Connecticut" comes from an Algonquin Indian word meaning "on the long tidal river." Connecticut is one of the original 13 states.

Middletown, Connecticut was the major supplier of pistols to the United States government during the War of 1812, with numerous gun manufacturers in the area.

 Mattabasset River - CT
Had to paddle upstream on the Ct. River and because of all the boat activity stayed toward the side.
This is a nice winding river and I paddled about 3 hrs in past another possible put in I found out about at the Sawmill Pub in Cromwell.
I have a CT and RI atlas and Gazetteer book that gave me a better idea of how the river flowed and it showed me to stay to the right and not take the left fork branch which is the Coginchaug River for another day.

Although I've only been on this river twice, both times it was calm and seemed to not be moving at all.
The first time was with a kayak but this time I took my little one in the canoe and she had fun.

The river is only 4 to 8 feet wide and is not very deep most of the time hip boots will be fine.
