Coherent (operating system) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coherent was capable of running on most Intel-based PCs with Intel 8088, 286, 386, and 486 processors and, like a true Unix, was capable of multitasking and of having multiple users.
Coherent was based on the specifications of Unix Version 7, without reference to any of the Unix source code, either from Bell Labs or BSD.
Coherent was unable to compete with the burgeoning GNU/Linux movement, which, owing to its vast body of contributors, quickly exceeded Coherent in feature set and quality.

Coherence (physics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The property of coherence is the basis for commercial applications such as holography, the Sagnac gyroscope, radio antenna arrays, optical coherence tomography and telescope interferometers (astronomical optical interferometers and radio telescopes).
In optics, temporal coherence is measured in an interferometer such as the Michelson interferometer or Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
The quantum description of perfectly coherent paths is called a pure state, in which the two paths are combined in a superposition.

 Quantum properties of light
Coherence is one of the unique properties of laser light.
This coherence is described in terms of temporal coherence and spatial coherence, both of which are important in producing the interference which is used to produce holograms.
There is a degree of coherence in sources like the mercury green line and some other useful spectral sources, but their coherence does not approach that of a laser.

Coherent and time-resolved imaging   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One of the fundamental properties of the laser is its ability produce spatially coherent beams that can be focused to a very small spot size comparable to the wavelength l, or to record complex images such as holograms.
This process thus coherently up-shifts a femtosecond pulse from the visible into the EUV region of the spectrum.
Such an EUV source, with good beam quality and high spatial coherence, can be used for experiments in femtosecond holography, high-precision metrology, inspection of optical components for EUV lithography, and for microscopy with nanometer resolution.

Coherent Sampling vs. Window Sampling - Maxim/Dallas
One of the most useful techniques for evaluating the dynamic performance of high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is coherent sampling, a method that increases the spectral resolution of an FFT and eliminates the need for window sampling when certain conditions are met.
Coherent sampling describes the sampling of a periodic signal, where an integer number of its cycles fit into a predefined sampling window.
Although it is often assumed that no window is used for coherent sampling, in actuality, the input signal is convolved with a rectangular-shaped window of uniform height.

A 'salty' source of coherent light
Coherent light is produced by a beam of photons that all have the same frequency and are all at the same phase.
The emission frequencies are determined by the shock speed and the lattice make-up of the crystal.
We predict that coherent electromagnetic radiation in the 1-100 THz frequency range can be generated in crystalline materials when subject to a shock wave or solitonlike propagating excitation.

For what's it worth, I thought I'd share my experiences of shifting from Coherent across to Linux, as many people are probably in the midst of doing it at the moment or are considering shifting across to another OS at some point.
IMHO, Coherent failed because management didn't listen or deliver to us what we needed, or delivered way over time, but that's in the past, and if you are considering swapping over to one of the free Unix or Unix-like operating systems, I doubt you would be disappointed.
Both the Linux and BSD communities are full of very talented programmers (and now document writers) who are developing their respective systems into very powerful operating systems that put a lot of the commercial Unix systems that I have seen to shame.

 Coherent Imaging Group at UCLA
These limitations can in principle be overcome by using coherent imaging that is based upon the principle of coherent scattering in combination with a method of direct phase recovery called oversampling.
While coherent X-rays have been successfully used to image a variety of specimens, the principle can also be extend to optical lasers and electrons.
In the long run, in a combination of the X-ray free electron lasers such as the Linac Coherent Light Source at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, coherent imaging could potentially be used to determine the 3D structure of single particles down to the single atom level [10, 11].

Coherent states are the epitomy of classical light; it is thus surprising that coherent states yield highly nonclassical phenomena under some circumstances.

 Cassini-Mission to Saturn-Operations-Navigation-Coherent Mode
The solution is to have the spacecraft generate a downlink that is coherent to the uplink it receives.
That scheme is called coherent mode, because Cassini's downlink frequency is coherent with (based on) the uplink frequency.
When Cassini is using its ultra-stable oscillator or other means to generate its downlink frequency, it is known as non-coherent mode, because the downlink is not coherent with the uplink.

Coherent Sampling Calculator (CSC) - Maxim/Dallas
Based on the theory of coherent sampling, the calculator allows a user to chose input and sampling frequencies as well as number of integer cycles within the sampling window and the resolution (number of data point) of the FFT.
Maxim's application note "Coherent Sampling vs. Window Sampling" details the advantages and disadvantages of each sampling technique, but, in general, coherent sampling produces the best quality in high-resolution FFTs.
The purpose of coherent sampling is to force an integer number of input cycles within the sampling window.

Lasers and coherence; "coherent light," WHAT IS COHERENCE?
Whenever all the "snakes" pack together side by side with their wiggles aligned, that's "coherence." The atoms in a laser are all emitting their light in locked phase, and the end result is supposedly special kind of in-phase light where the little sine-waves stack together like egg cartons.
The explanation of coherence found in most introductory textbooks is pure garbage.

If you are unfamiliar with the concept of coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) to measure atmospheric winds and aerosols, then see our handy list of definitions to some key words and concepts.
The Multi-center Airborne Coherent Atmospheric Wind Sensor (MACAWS) is an airborne, pulsed, scanning, coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) that remotely senses the distribution of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter within three-dimensional volumes in the troposphere and lower stratosphere.
All of these factors must be taken into account when predicting the performance of small-satellite Doppler wind lidars, and ultimately the impact of the measurements on climate and global change studies and numerical weather prediction.
