Coherent radiation emitted from a relativistic electron bunch consists of wavelengths longer than or comparable to the bunch length.
Coherent transition radiation emitted from subpicosecond electron bunches at the Stanford SUNSHINE facility is observed in the far-infrared regime through a room-temperature pyroelectric bolometer and characterized through the electron bunch-length study.
Hence, the radiation spectrum and the bunch length are deduced from the autocorrelation measurement.

High power efficient frequency conversion of coherent radiation with nonlinear optical elements
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for converting the frequency of coherent radiation, and particularly to frequency conversion methods and apparatus using nonlinear optical elements, such as crystals having nonlinear optical coefficients which are useful for tripling the frequency of a beam of input coherent radiation.
It is a further object of the invention to provide improved methods and apparatus for converting the frequency of coherent radiation which overcomes the limitation of reconversion of the frequency of the beam from the desired output frequency back into an input frequency thereof in the nonlinear optical elements in which frequency conversion occurs.
The frequency of the radiation is doubled in the crystal with efficiency of approximately 67% (preferably near the peak of the efficiency characteristic) due to the energy relationships obtained by the orientation of the polarization directions of the beam with respect to the crystal.

Coherent bremsstrahlung   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
A drawback of the dual-rotation procedure is that the coherent enhancement is less when a single lattice vector contributes than when a whole row of vectors contribute, a factor of 3 for diamond on the (0,2,2) vector.
Since for thin radiators the radiation probability is roughly uniform throughout the crystal, the effective beam distribution is an average over radiation depth.

 Coherent Terahertz Synchrotron Radiation
When the wavelength of synchrotron radiation is comparable to the length of an electron bunch in the storage ring, or the length of any structure on the bunch, the radiation from multiple electrons is in phase, resulting in a quadratic rather than the usual linear dependence of the power emitted on the number of electrons.
However, when the wavelength of the emitted radiation is comparable to the length of an electron bunch, the electrons emit in unison rather than as individuals.
This coherent emission results in a dramatic increase in the power emitted (proportional to the square of the number of electrons), thereby also generating a wave of enthusiasm among scientists who are potential users of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR).

OPO 120 is pumped by one portion of the 532 nm beam 115 to produce a beam of radiation 125 at a wavelength of 703 nm.
Laser 312 is retrofitted with a small dot Gaussian mirror reflector to configure the pulses of coherent radiation to have a uniform mode of approximately 5 mm diameter, which in turn increases the efficiency of pumping the OPO 120.
A dichroic mirror M5 reflects radiation at a wavelength of 266 nm and transmits radiation at a wavelength of 703 nm and therefore combines the 703 nm beam 125 from OPO 120 with the 266 nm beam 135 from frequency doubler 130.

laser. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The coherent light produced by a laser differs from ordinary light in that it is made up of waves all of the same wavelength and all in phase (i.e., in step with each other); ordinary light contains many different wavelengths and phase relations.
Electromagnetic radiation (e.g., light or microwaves) is emitted or absorbed by the atoms or molecules of a substance only at certain characteristic frequencies.
This produces a sudden burst of coherent radiation as all the atoms discharge in a rapid chain reaction.

Influence of Relaxation Phenomena on Coherent...
Coherence is central to quantum information (including communication, computing and cryptography), coherent quantum control of reaction processes, and laser physics.
Such transitions are advantageous in the generation of coherent electromagnetic radiation and also provide the basis for the spectroscopic investigation of the electronic structure and optical properties of materials.
We have also been concerned with applications to coherent radiation processes involving energetic electron beams propagating in a crystal lattice, which gives rise to organized (or collective) electric fields and to radiation processes that are distinct from those in amorphous solids.

Theory of coherent transition radiation generated at a plasma-vacuum interface
Transition radiation generated by an electron beam, produced by a laser wakefield accelerator operating in the self-modulated regime, crossing the plasma-vacuum boundary is considered.
Diffraction radiation from the finite transverse extent of the plasma is considered and shown to strongly modify the spectra and energy radiated for long wavelength radiation.
This method of transition radiation generation has the capability of producing high peak power THz radiation, of order 100 (mu)J/pulse at the plasma-vacuum interface, which is several orders of magnitude beyond current state-of-the-art THz sources.

Coherent radiation from the electrons in a synchrotron
The coherent radiation emitted by the electrons in a synchrotron has been studied experimentally at a wavelength of 10 cm for various electron distributions within the phase stable region.
In the majority of cases these experiments confirm the theory of coherent radiation from electrons but deviations from the theory are observed for electron distributions which approach uniformity.
The emitted radiation has been used to measure the frequency of the electron phase oscillations and also the adiabatic damping of the phase oscillation amplitudes.

Method and apparatus for generating coherent radiation
a directional coupler positioned between the source of radiation and the optical waveguide ring and the relatively broad linewidth radiation is guided by said directional coupler to the ring along a first path while the relatively narrow linewidth wave is separated from the first path by said directional coupler and guided to an output port.
There is now a requirement for the generation of relatively narrow linewidth coherent radiation and to achieve this it has been necessary to construct highly accurate and therefore expensive radiation sources.
The characteristics of the broad linewidth radiation and the form of the waveguide ring must be such that scattering occurs.

Microstructures Emit Coherent IR Radiation - June, 2002   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
To enable them to observe the coherent radiation, the researchers coupled the surface waves to those propagating from the material-air interface.
To verify that the phenomenon was due to coupling of the surface wave, the researchers measured the emissivity for s- and p-polarization, finding no peaks for s-polarization and none for p-polarization in the spectral regions where there should be no surface waves.
He also suggested that the design could be used to produce sources of coherent thermal radiation that emit in only one direction.

Terahertz radiation: applications and sources - The Industrial Physicist
Also, because terahertz radiation is readily absorbed by water, it can be used to distinguish between materials with varying water content—for example, fat versus lean meat.
For example, Gerald Fraser’s group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology is frequency mixing the output of a near-IR, fixed-frequency diode laser with that of a tunable Ti:sapphire laser in a lowtemperature- grown gallium arsenide photomixer fabricated with the appropriate antenna pattern.
Although the practical application of terahertz radiation is in its infancy, the recent availability of reliable sources in the 0.3- to 5-THz range may have a wide-ranging impact on science, industry, and medicine.

Terahertz breakthrough at BESSY (March 2003) - News - PhysicsWeb
Synchrotron radiation is produced when bunches of charged particles, usually electrons that have been accelerated to close to the speed of light, are forced to move in a circular orbit by strong magnetic fields.
Terahertz radiation is found at the low-energy end of the spectrum and corresponds to wavelengths between about 1 mm and 15 microns.
Synchrotron radiation is usually incoherent because the bunches - which contain billions of electrons each - are longer than the wavelengths they are emitting.
