Coil (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The two track LP was described on the album cover, as "ritual music for the accumulation of male sexual energy", and was said to have been produced under a variety of technological, spiritual, and meteorological conditions which the band felt to be magickally significant.
The album presented a template for what would be representative of newer waves of industrial music seemlessly blending with their own form of acid house.
In December of 2005, the final Coil album, The Ape of Naples, was released.

Coil has also stated that speculation about "Scope" being an early version of "Her Friends The Wolves" (from STOLEN AND COTAMINATED SONGS) is false, and that the track was actually a "studio jam" fueled by "experimenting with MDMA".
Coil gave their blessing for it to be released on a non-profit basis via mail order.
Coil's music was originally given to Laswell for an earlier project but the deadline was missed, so they used it themselves as the basis for the "Stoned Circular" tracks on the Black Light District album A THOUSAND LIGHTS IN A DARKENED ROOM.

At the same time as we were doing that William Burroughs released an album of his cut-up tapes [on Industrial Records] his work had totally as you say a literary base.
Y'know it doesn't sound anything at all like Coil but at the same time it's interesting to us to make that kind of music and so we feel it's important that it's not shackled with a kind of Coil terminology.
The second album was when our friends were starting to die, disease and lifestyle, we looked at that a lot.

PopMatters My Favorite Thing | Moon Musick: Coil's Musick to Play in the Dark
In fact, it's likely that to this very day, I might never had heard of Coil were it not for Trent Reznor's obvious superfan status -- Coil was one of his favorite remixers, and for good reason, as it did some of the most outstanding remixes of Reznor's material ever laid to the proverbial wax.
Now, Coil is the type of band that is not tied down to any particular aesthetic other than that of experimentality and the esoteric.
The album begins its second-half wind-down with "Broccoli", a reflection on the importance of ancestry (with a rare vocal appearance from Coil primary Peter Christopherson) whose backing consists largely of static pops assembled just-so, built to approximate the crackle of a roaring fire.

Coil’s second full-length continues in the industrial vein as evidenced by the opener "The Anal Staircase," which was originally released as a 12" in a different mix.
The album consists of Coil’s ambient (which is not necessarily to say ‘relaxing’ or ‘mellow’) soundscapes under the recitation of Shakespearean sonnets; at times the Shakespearean stuff gets in the way of the music, but for the most part, the combination of the two enhances the effect of each part.
The liner notes state "This album was recorded in two days at Samhain 1998ev under the level of the River Thames in the Ancient Borough of Southwark." Originally released in a limited edition of 99 vinyl copies, Coil re-worked, remixed, re-edited and added another track for the CD release in 2000.

Lacuna Coil Karmacode Review | Cristina Scabbia Interview at Musical Discoveries
She said that if you listen to the album there are a lot of arrangements and a big duality with the European roots and European sound and structure of the songs.
Clearly one of the album's standout tracks is the delicately arranged ballad "In Visible Light." Cristina sings the verses alone in a relatively low key to perfectly adjoin the densely layered chorus, performed in classic Lacuna Coil style.
While in addition to the new album, the band have already released an EP with several bonus tracks, clearly their fans won't want to wait for the next album as long as they have had to for this one.

Coil by Toad The Wet Sprocket CD
COIL doesn't necessarily break any new ground for the quartet, but it does maintain the tradition of catchy, accessible "modern" rock that Toad has perfected over the course of a long recording career.
Like previous Toad releases, COIL is heavy on the hooks, with lush harmonies and airy sheets of guitar adorning classic pop song forms distinguished by occasionally oblique lyrics.
Maybe because it was their last. From almost hard rock 'amnesia'to beautiful etheral melodies 'all things in time' this is a solid album and it is a shame we will probably never hear from Toad again.

 Youngmanridge.com - Lacuna Coil's "Unleashed Memories" Review
Well, I don’t know if Lacuna Coil is completely original because of my ignorance of the ethereal/gothic genre, yet, ridding myself of all this posturing, I have to say that I enjoy the freshness of L.C. immensely.
Lacuna Coil is distinctive because it blends an ethereal female voice with an aggressive, sometimes death-toned, sometimes not, male voice.
It may not even be Lacuna Coil’s absolute best, but for these virgin ears, tired of nasally voiced high-school-skater-rock, it unleashed memories of a better time in the music world, a time where musicians put spirit into their work, rather than a thumb up their puckers.

Despite all the influences, Solstice Coil's music has a distinctive and unique style, the result of a mature band creating music together for almost 4 years, uncompromisingly striving for excellence.

The original version of "Triple Sun" was released on the...And the Ambulance Died his Arms live album and has an undeniable beauty, the introduction providing a tense of air of expectation that opened some of their final shows.
The last song on the album is actually a cover of theme for the british sit-com "Are You being Served?" Guest-starring Francois Testory's high tenor, the song is tranformed into an ethereal dirge, a lament for Balance perhaps.
This album is an excellent introduction to the band's eclectic and interesting work, seeming to be the culmination of the band's many sounds and musical incarnations.

The duo consistently produced stunning albums, but the recordings were often in scarce limited editions that usually reached only hardcore fans.
The CD is the first full-length album Coil released on its own Chalice label as a subscription only release.
The album is a masterpiece of the caliber of the classic '80s trilogy Scatology, Horse Rotovator, and Loves Secret Domain, which gave Coil the highest stature in the post-industrial music scene as one of the most inventive, original, and courageous groups of the genre.

Queens of the Circulating Library - Coil - Music Reviews
On this limited-edition CD, packaged in a pink C-shell with no other inserts, Coil is stripped down to just John Balance and Thighpaulsandra, with the addition of Dorothy Lewis, a retired opera singer and Thighpaulsandra's mother who adds some spoken word material written by Balance.
Loops of her voice become electronically manipulated to add some weird textures to the drones, but even these fade out about a quarter of the way in, and the remainder of the disc drifts off in the shifting drones until it finally fades into silence at the end.
The analog synths lend the piece a very organic sound that is quite similar to the early albums of Klaus Schulze and other kosmische music and less like Coil's previous work, ambient or otherwise.

The first full length album (Century Media (USA) 7934-2, 1999) from Lacuna Coil is comprised of eight brand new tracks and a re-arranged reprise of "Falling" from the band's debut recording.
The second full length album (Century Media (USA) 8060-2, 2001) was released in March 2001; it couples Lacuna Coil's trademarked songwriting skills with thrilling complementary female and male vocal textures and authors another chapter in the band's stunningly emootive and altogether enigmatic musical alchemy, resulting in a singular soul-massaging sound.
Lacuna Coil's metal-edged instrumental power is evident across the album's tracks, they begin full on in "Swamped." Andrea's lead introduces the lyrical content while Cristina's dramatic backing vocal soars in the distance before coming front and centre in the well-produced arrangement.

I must admit that I think the first couple of songs on the album are the weakest tracks but from track three and on, the album is just flawless.

The idea for This Mortal Coil germinated around that time; having been unsuccessful in convincing Modern English to record a covers medley that closed their concerts, Watts-Russell decided to do it himself.
Much of the same core cast -- Watts-Russell, Fryer, McCarrick, Appleton, Limerick, and the Rutkowskis -- was on hand for the third and final This Mortal Coil album, the tighter Blood, issued in 1991.
