  Coil gun - HvWiki
As more turns are added to the coil, the strength of the B field for a given current is increased, however the maximum current in the coil is decreased due to the extra resistance of the wire and inductance in the coil.
The length of the pulse is defined by the inductance of the coil, the capacitance, the resistance in the circuit as well as the complex interactions between the projectile and the coil.
The best coil for a given capacitor size is the one where when the capacitor is discharged and accelerates a load, the pulse width is approximately equal to what you wanted it to be and the magnetic force exerted on the load is approximately equal to what you wanted it to be.

One of the greatest limitations to the coil gun is the rate at which the ferromagnetic projectile becomes fully saturated by the magnetic field and the rate at which it loses its magnetic saturation.
Coil resistance is also on top of the list of major limitations, when dumping large amounts of electrical energy into a coil, the majority of its energy is lost as it is converted to heat because of resistance.
The coil gun was actually first called the "electric gun" and first described in detail as a way to launch vehicles into outer space from the earth's surface in the 1897 science fiction novel "A Trip to Venus" by John Munro and published in 1897 by Jarrold & Sons, London.

A coil gun (also Gauss gun) is another type of electromagnetic accelerator, but should not be confused with a rail gun, which accelerates projectiles down two parallel conducting rails.
A large electrical current is pulsed on the coil and a strong magnetic field forms, pulling the projectile to the center of the coil.
Coil guns are a popular device in science fiction, espcially sci-fi role playing and video games, where they go under such names as Gauss cannon or Gauss rifle (e.g., in Battletech).

There are a few things to remember when constructing a coil gun, the more joules the more powerful (but the more joules also mean the more dangerous) and the more turns in the coil the stronger the magnetic field is.

In a traditional gun the fast burn of the powder has a hard recoil at the start and then tapers off, while a coil gun could spread the recoil out for a longer stretch of time.
This idea is also like the Gauss gun which uses 2 magnets, a stationary one, and a round one, and when you place a round where the stationary one is, and have a rail for the ball to go on, it can launch (if w/ good magnets) at fairly high speeds, not practical just cool.
In mass-lock guns the part that does the reloading (slide/lock) is also the part that absorbs a significant amount of the recoil against its own mass and a reloading spring.

 Coilgun Information
A coilgun (also known as Gauss gun, Gauss cannon or Gauss rifle) is a type of cannon that uses a series of electromagnets to accelerate a magnetic shell to very high velocities.
A large current is pulsed through the coil and a strong magnetic field forms, pulling the projectile to the center of the coil.

The wire diameter isn't critical, what is important is that the coil has sufficient resistance to limit the current to a safe level.
If the projectile is the same length as the coil the switch will open shortly before the projectile gets to the middle of the coil producing good current timing.

Second, the farther the projectile is from the coil when the coil is energized, the weaker the magnetic pull will be; you don't want to waste power by turning the magnet on while the object is too far away to get much oomph from it.

Most coil guns, have a projectile placed just outside the coil, when the coil is enegised, the projectile it strongly attracted to the centre of the coil, but the pulse has stopped by the time it gets there, so it just goes through the coil, and out the other end.
