  Coil Spring Technical Information
Coil springs are the most common used spring in most all motor-sports today.
Furthermore, with the incorporation of the coil-over spring/shock type suspension, the coil spring and shock ratio is close together and operates as one unit.
When using the closed-end type springs, we recommend that the spring be wire tied in place just enough so as to hold the spring in place, but not where the spring is in a bind.

Coil Spring Information - Automated Wire Products   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Coil springs are made of a material, usually a maleable metal, that exerts usable amounts of energy on the world around it through give and resistance.
For example, a coil spring is in used the mechanism that closes screen doors: exerting force sufficient to close the door, but insufficient to break it off.
Coil springs are ideal, then, for a wide range of mechanical uses because they can store a relatively large amount of potential energy in a small space.

Coil spring assembly - Patent 4095297
The novel coil spring assembly is depicted in the drawings as including five rows of coil springs, in six files, thereby constituting an assembly with dimensions approximately those of a seating cushion.
The springs 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, and 14e are in five parallel rows from one end of the assembly to the other, these springs being aligned crosswise to form six files of springs from one side of the assembly to the other.
Any torque created in the individual springs by axial force thereon, and tending to cause spring twisting, is counteracted by the noted interconnections of the assembly, and particularly by the interrelationship of the linear portions of individual springs and rows of springs with the connecting cross helicals.

Getting the springs into the position was the easy part, but the spring insulators were stubborn and repeatedly fell off the top of the coil springs while attempting to get the springs into position.
With some persistence, I was able to get the coil springs and their respective insulators into position but perhaps some tape to hold the insulators in place would have made the job a little easier.

Lee Spring - Compression Springs manufactured by Lee Spring
Squared and ground end compression stock springs are particularly useful in applications in which 1) high-duty springs are specified, 2) unusually close tolerances on load or rate are needed, 3) solid height must be minimized, 4) accurate seating and uniform bearing pressures are required and 5) a tendency towards buckling must be reduced.
Applications: Compression Metal Springs are found in a wide variety of applications ranging from automotive engines and large stamping presses to major appliances and lawn mowers to medical devices, cell phones, electronics and sensitive instrumentation devices.
The stress is greatest at the surface of the wire; as the spring is deflected, the load varies, causing a range of operating stress.

Truck Springs, Truck Suspension, Coil Springs, and Leaf Springs - 4 Wheel and Offroad Magazine
The spring, and we’re talking about any spring (coil, leaf, torsion bar, or airbag), permits the wheels and tires of a vehicle to bob and weave, scouting for traction and grip while the rest of the vehicle maintains a much more controlled and even keel.
The springs of a vehicle are a compliant system that soak up the bumps and holes in the earth, sifting out most of the harsh crashing and bashing to let us, the drivers, concentrate on controlling the direction and speed of the vehicle.
The leaf spring was around long before four-wheel drive, and their ability to both spring the vehicle and locate an axle makes them a proven piece that kills a whole flock of birds with a single stone.

Coil Springs - Spring Engineers of Houston, LTD
Coil springs come in many forms but there are three common classes; Compression springs, extension springs and torsion springs.
In the case of a compression spring, this might be the hole into which the spring fits, the rod over which it operates, the maximum free length to allow cap threads to engage and a maximum solid length (though not the product of coils times wire size!).
Material diameter, spring diameter and spring length are all subject to change and need to be toleranced in such a way as to get the best fit for your operating requirements.

Coil Spring Compressors and MacPherson Strut Compressors
Whenever you are working with a coil spring compressor or a MacPherson Strut compressor, you should always be careful and install the unit properly to avoid injury, because quite a bit of pressure is involved when using these spring compressors.
The internal coil spring compressor is used for the installation and removal of springs and spacers and is used for everything that does not have obstruction going through the center part of the spring, such as MacPherson Struts or shock absorbers.
External coil spring compressors are used to service conventional MacPherson Struts, as well as those used on GM A, J, and X body cars.

 Spring Solutions - Coil Springs
While compression springs are the least expensive coil spring to produce they are also the most durable form of coil spring available.
These springs can be supplied with open hooks, closed eyes or various other forms of attachment on the ends and they can normally be made complete on a CNC spring forming machine.
Torsion springs are designed to resist twist or rotationally applied force, they have a body of coils with “legs” that are commonly attached to other components that exert torque when rotated around the spring.

 The Ranger Station
Spring Load is the amount of weight the spring is designed to carry at a certain height.
The wheel rate is usually lower than the true spring rate due to factors such as spring position and control arm or axle leverage that can effectively lessen the spring rate at the wheel versus the actual spring rate at the spring.
If you move the spring closer to the tire (and the spring travels parallel to the wheel), the wheel rate and spring rate will become almost the same.

 Coil Spring Information
Spring rate refers to the amount of weight needed to compress a spring an inch (Example:500# per inch) To understand and properly check a spring for rate you need to know the factors that determine the rate of the spring.
Springs that are designed to include coils of different diameter or are wound using a tapered wire will also produce a progressive rate.
The front springs on a IFS Suzki (used in a A-arm aplication) are under twice the load of those used in a solid axle configuration.   In Short most solid axle type coils will collapse under the leverage weighted load on the front of a Suzuki IFS vehicle.

One such change was the departure from a leaf-spring rear suspension to one that utilized coil springs to support the truck and multiple control arms and links to locate the axle.
A good combination would be a mild lift spring that has a higher spring rate, and a coil spring spacer designed to increase lift, but not go overboard and stress the other rear suspension parts.
