Coil tap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The coil tap(s) are points in a wire coil where a conductive patch has been exposed (usually on a loop of wire that extends out of the main coil body).
When a coil tap is connected to one end of the coil (or the end disconnected and reconnected to the tap), the section of coil between the tap and its connected end is bypassed - effectively reducing the number of turns in the coil.
In a transformer, coil taps are often used on both the input and output coils.

A coil tap refers to a lead connected to an individual coil’s winding and is used to raise and lower a pickup’s output and change its tone.
Coil splitting refers to the ability to disable one coil in a humbucker-type pickup.
The term coil tap in relations to a humbuckers is often used incorrectly when what is meant is coil splitting.

 Guitars: Glossary
In coils and transformers a center tap is a tap (see WFTD Tap) at the center of the winding of wire, which puts it at the halfway point of the overall impedance and voltage of the coil.
In general a coil tap is an access point somewhere along the wire that is wound in a coil or transformer.
Transformers may have their coils tapped to provide different voltages in a power supply that may be required for the operation of some device, for example.

A single coil pickup has a brighter and cutting sound and is used by players of many styles from blues to rock.
Coil taps are useful when trying to achieve a wide variety of sounds in a single guitar.
Coil tappping is actually when a lead is taken from the coil of a pickup at a certain percentage of the windings available, therefore disengaging some of the windings of the coil and using the rest.

The trade-off to this wide range of adjustability is that there is a slight loss in coil Q and an increase in the loss resistance of the coil because of the taps and the changing form factor as the coil taps selected.
The tap was formed by removing about three inches of insulation from the wire as it was being wound on the bucket, and then grabbing the center of the bare wire with a pair of regular pliers and twisting the wire through 360 degrees.

The telephone tap or wire tap received its name because, historically, the monitoring connection was applied to the wires of the telephone line of the person who was being monitored and drew off or tapped a small amount of the electrical signal carrying the conversation.
Telephone tapping is officially strictly controlled in many countries to safeguard an individual's privacy; this is the case in all developed democracies.
In theory, telephone tapping often needs to be authorised by a court, and is, again in theory, normally only approved when evidence shows it is not possible to detect criminal or subversive activity in less intrusive ways; often the law and regulations require that the crime investigated must be at least of a certain severity.
