Magnesium level in drinking water   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
Though Mg does not appear as a major antihypertensive nutrient, Mg deficit through its numerous noxious actions, both directly on the nephro-cardiovascular apparatus and indirectly through the neuroendocrine apparatus, may sometimes, behave as a cofactor of a hypertensive factor in particular cases.
Mg does not appear to be a panacea which antagonizes all noxious agents, but it seems to be an antagonist of the two main polluting metals which induce the nephro-cardiovasotoxicity of some corrosive drinking waters.
Mg does not antagonize all noxious agents but reverses the effects of the two main polluting metals, Pb and Cd which are responsible for the renal and cardiovascular toxicity of some corrosive drinking waters.

Two fatal cases and a clinical case were only reported by Toxicological Laboratory of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Coimbra from 1960 to 1995.
The clinical case manifested typical symptoms of strychnine intoxication and in the fatal case no specific lesions were found during the autopsy except oedema of the viscera.

A similar band 3 reduction was observed for normal/Coimbra patients I.2 and II.2 of family MG (band 3/spectrin, ~-18%; band 3/protein 4.1, ~-27%; Table 1 and Fig 2).
In Coimbra/Mondego individuals III.1 and III.2 of family MG (presenting with an aggravated clinical picture), the reductions were more pronounced for band 3 (~-40%; Table 1 and Fig 2) and protein 4.2 (~-37%; Fig 2).
There was a slight decrease in band 3 in normal/Mondego individuals II.1 and III.3 in family MG (-6% for band 3/spectrin or -12% for band 3/protein 4.1; Table 1 and Fig 2), but protein 4.2 was not reduced (Fig 2).

Pemphigus vulgaris with nail involvement presenting with vegetating and verrucous lesions
Mucous and cutaneous lesions, including the warty lesions of the fingers and toes, improved considerably, but the use of higher doses of methylprednisolone led to the aggravation of her diabetes, which could not be controlled with the increased doses of subcutaneous insulin, necessitating hospitalization to perform insulin perfusion.
A partial response was obtained with the introduction of oral steroids (methylprednisolone 32 mg per day), alone or in association with azathioprine (50 mg bid) or mycophenolate mofetil (2 g daily).
In November she started treatment with cyclophosphamide (50 mg daily and later 100 mg daily) and methylprednisolone (16 mg daily), showing improvement of the disease, maintaining discrete asymptomatic oral lesions and some verrucous lesions of the hands.

 FEBS Abstract
Laboratory of Microbiologia, Centro de Neurociências de Coimbra and Departamento de Bioquímica, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.
In this study, the presence of genes leading to the synthesis of trehalose (TRE) and mannosylglycerate (MG), in 17 strains of the genus Thermus, was correlated with their ability to grow and accumulate these compatible solutes, in a defined medium containing NaCl.
In mutant RQ-1M2, the disruption of mpgs gene lead to the inability to accumulate MG and reduced the ability to grow in a defined salt-containing medium, with the maximum salinity being 5% NaCl for RQ-1 and 3% NaCl for RQ-1M2.

Headache : by Ray sahelian, M.D., Natural Therapies for Headache
In a study conducted at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, 65 patients with chronic tension-type headaches were treated with 5-HTP or placebo for 8 weeks.
In comparison with the group treated with placebo, there was no statistically significant change in the number of days with headache or in headache intensity in the group treated with 5-HTP; however, there was a significant decrease in the consumption of pain killers.
The placebo response exceeds that reported for any other placebo in trials of migraine prophylaxis, and suggests that riboflavin 25 mg may be an active comparator.

The Migraine Headache File: Tension Headaches   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the effect of 75 mg of a slow-release formulation of amitriptyline on the clinical severity of chronic tension-type headache and on headache-associated neurophysiological parameters (EMG activity, exteroceptive suppression of temporal muscle activity, contingent negative variation (CNV) and experimental pain sensitivity) was investigated.
Tolerability and efficacy of 60-90 mg amitriptyline oxide (AO) as a single dose in the evening were compared with 50-75 mg amitriptyline (AM) and placebo (PL) in a double-blind, parallel-group trial consisting of a 4-week baseline phase and 12 weeks of treatment.
The major clinical parameters evaluated were the headache index (days with headache per month), the frequency of drug use for the acute management of headaches, the patients' opinion for the treatment and the Hamilton anxiety and depression rating scales.
