10-21-97, Statement of James Benfield   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The coin assumes value at the point when the coin is swapped for its face value with the public, because the government stands behind it and will refund its face value on demand.
The Coin Coalition believes the impact of a $1 coin on these entities will be nil because the productive capacity should be used to make $2 bills and to quickly introduce the next generation of Federal Reserve notes to discourage the continued counterfeiting of high-denomination bills in the Middle East and Columbia.
The Coalition opposes changing the physical dimensions of a new $1 coin, as this would require the vending/coin-operated industries, as well as the mass transit authorities, to retrofit all the machines that have been designed to handle the Anthony dollar.

Despite the prevalence of the common term "penny," the U.S. Mint has never actually minted a coin for which this is the official name.
In 1943, at the peak of World War II, pennies of zinc-plated steel were made for a short time due to war demands for copper; a few copper cents from 1943 were produced.
Following that year, salvaged ammunition shells made their way into the minting process, and it was not uncommon to see coins featuring streaks of brass or having a considerably darker finish than other issues.

Part of the 1997 dollar coin debate was about this very subject - which is why the Alliance had joined with the Coin Coalition in promoting a new dollar coin.
Information concerning this was provided in conversation with the Coin Coalition in late 1999 - which is when I was informed of the Braille tests on the Martha dollar.
The statement that the known Martha Braille pieces (2?) are on PMX alloy was inferred by both the appearance of the coin (brilliant and highly reflective) and a conversation with PMX's parent - Poongsan Corporation / Korea - in mid 1999.

The new dollar coin has the same size, weight, and magnetic signature as the old SBA dollar, but is golden in color and has a (smooth) "distinctive edge".
What this means is that the coin is much more easily recognizable and distinguishable, because of its coloring and the fact that it does not have the reeded edge currently seen on quarters and SBA dollars.
Also, as the coin circulates and ages, it becomes darker in color, taking on the color of antique brass, making it even more easily distinquishable from other coins.
