A Brief Guide to "Coingate" - Common Cause
"Coingate" is the term given to an ongoing scandal that has implicated officials on almost every level of government in Ohio and has received attention from the national press.
Coingate started when the Toledo Blade published a story about how the Ohio's Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) was investing a portion of its portfolio into a rare coin fund managed by a prominent Republican fundraiser named Thomas Noe.
As the extent of "Coingate" unfolded, questions were raised as to how Republican state officials, who benefited from Noe family's generous fundraising, would be able to investigate the scandal in a nonpartisan and effective manner.

COLUMBUS - With its intrigue of missing rare coins bought with state funds and campaign cash flowing to Ohio Republican leaders, some are predicting that "Coingate" will be a bigger scandal than the one that led to a near-Democratic sweep of statewide offices in 1970.
But the question now is whether Democrats will capitalize on the growing Republican scandal surrounding the state's $10 million to $12 million loss in rare-coin investments controlled by Tom Noe, a prominent Toledo-area GOP fund-raiser and coin dealer.
Another potential obstacle to Democrats capitalizing politically on "Coingate" is the role in the rare-coin investment of Bill Burga, president of the Ohio AFL-CIO.

The fact that there is all this money gone missing, and that Ohio had what was at best, poorly run elections, and at worst, fraudulent elections which led to the reelection of President Bush by a mere 10,000 votes, I am sure is a complete coincidence (pun intended).
