		Over the period 1998 to 2003 the annual incidence of congenital malformations appeared to increase in Cojedes State, Venezuela.
		Due to state emphasis on agriculture, the wide variety of pesticides available, the lack of understanding of the environmental fate of these pesticides, and the lack of documentation regarding methods of use of these pesticides, suspicions had been raised in the health services community that pesticides may be linked to the observed increase in malformations.
		Our objectives were to select a representative community in Cojedes State and identify potential pesticide exposure pathways for farmers and farmer families, and to review potential associated health risks.
