We head first towards col du Galibier which means we first have to clmb up to col du Lautaret from which we immediately start climbing the col du Galibier.
When we reach the col du Lautaret my fancy electronic gadgets indicate that we have climbed over 1300m in 23miles and the old technology highway sign states we are at an altitude of 2058m.
These guides indicate that col du Galibier is 8.5km long with an average grade of 8%, a max grade of 10% and a finishing elevation of 2645m.

Between the bottom of the Col de la Croix de Fer and the start of the Col du Télégraphe there is actually some flat terrain among the up and down stuff.
There was a tail wind on the lower part of the Col du Galibier, but as the climb became switchbacks, it was sometimes a head wind.
The Col du Galibier is barren of trees.

It is 20km up to the Col du Galibier at 2648m (8700 feet), quite challenging and part of Tour Stage 8, and the climbing starts right at the hotel driveway.
It is a steady not to difficult climb of 25km to the Col, followed by a fantastic 38km downhill to the base of L'Alpe d'Huez.

I decided to ride from the campsite at the base of Huez, to the top of the Col du Lautaret at 2058m which was a 39km ride with nothing over 7pc but uphill most of the way.
From the Col du Lautaret, it's another 8kms to the top of the Col du Galibier at 2665m.
The Galibier is one of the highest road passes in the alpes and usually features in a mountain stage in the Tour De France.

The climb starts properly in St. Michel de-Maurienne (712m) and passes by Col du Télégraphe (1566m) where it is downhill to Valloire (1430m).
Water can be found for example at Valloire on the north side and at Col du Lautaret on the south side.

The Col du Telegraph is so named because at the very top of the climb is a series of radio and TV towers.
