Col du Tourmalet is a mountain pass at 42°55′N 0°09′E in the Central French Pyrenees.
Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous of the mountain climbs on the Tour de France bicycle race.
Tourmalet is also the name of a cheese made from sheep's milk produced in these mountains.

It is a bit steep up to the Tourmalet pass, so I got time to notice I had raced the day before, but it was not stopping me. At the pass I saw the gravel road (that I had never noticed in 2001 when I passed over the Tourmalet in perfect sunshine).
The last metres to Col des Laquets (2637) was cyclable and I managed to take a photo of me there on the second try (I really had to be super concentrated to succeed with that, as you see …).
On the east side of Col du Tourmalet I had to zig-zag down the road between Llama animals.

The plan was to start with an out-and-back along the most famous and highest col in the French Pyrenees, Col du Tourmalet, followed by a climb up to the ski station at Luz-Ardiden.
When Octave Lapize, who was some 15 minutes behind the leader, reached the pass of the Tourmalet in great pain and pushing his bike (see photo left), he saw a group of race officials and yelled “Assassins!” Lapize sucked it up, though, going on to take the stage and the overall title.
We climbed the Tourmalet from the more scenic west side, requiring 18 km (11 miles) of cycling with 1404 meters (4606 ft) of elevation gain with an average grade of 7.7%.

Following up on my post about upgrading the disk brake on out Orbit Twin 26 the bike got a test over the Col de la Croix Blanc and the Col du Tourmalet this month.
The Tourmalet was seriously hard work in the heat.
However while coming down off the Col de Bataille a few days before, the cable on our drag/drum brake snapped, and we ended up blowing the rear tube about 20s later.

The climb of the Tourmalet is about 18 kilometres from Luz and it is said to be one of the hardest climbs in France.
It took us 2 hours and 10 minutes, quite a nice time considering the fact that the Atlas des Cols gives an average time of 2 hours and three minutes for the '80-28' male (80 kilos and an average of 28 km/h on the flat).
It was hard to find the col sign in the thick fog, be we succeeded in making some nice pictures.

Today was the day we'd all been waiting for - the big climb up the Col du Tourmalet.
Lots of huffing and puffing, but we all made it, with a glorious view at the summit and a screaming descent down the other side.
Tom and Jon attempted a little cyclocross to bag Pic du Midi, off the summit of the Tourmalet, but were foiled in their attempt by a mid-afternoon thunderstorm.

We didn't stop long at the top, as a group of roadies needed to be chased (and overtaken) into Ste.

The spot where Van Est crashed in 1951 became known as Van Est Corner and in 2001, the Tour de France unveiled a plaque on the Col d'Aubisque to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of one of the Tour's wilder days.
We choose to focus on the most famous and spectacular cols, but there are other good roads to ride as part large loops and more out and backs.
