Col legno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Col Legno is also the name of a record label specializing in contemporary classical music.
A marking of col legno (Italian for "with the wood") in written music calls for striking the strings of bowed string instruments (particularly the violin, viola, cello, and double bass) with the stick of the bow, rather than by drawing the hair of the bow across the strings.
The eerie quality of a violin section playing col legno is exploited in some symphonic pieces, notably the "Dream of Witches' Sabbath" of the last movement of Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique.

As if this was not enough, Col Legno was accompanied by Paul Taylor's Company B (1991), his affectionate salute to the '40s (along with Richard Tanner's derivative Skin and Steel, in which at least the adagio was good).
"Col Legno" means "with the wood," referring to passages in which string players use the bow to tap the body of their instruments rather than play with the hair.
Among the cornucopia of good things Col Legno offered, I would single out for special praise the terrific third section, which on opening night was danced by six men and the simultaneously slinky and imperious Anne White, and the long, smooth, sensual solo by David Krensing in the fourth movement.

The Italian col legno means 'with the wood' and that is just what the violinist does: s/he plays the string with the wood of the back of the bow, making a rattling sound on the string.
The bow lands percussively on the string and remains in contact while it is drawn across a little.
The attack (the initial transient) is not so rapid as in col legno, because the bow hair is softer than the wood.
