An old resident of Ontario County telling of conditions there in 1825 made the statement that neither that nor adjacent counties were exactly crowded with officials.
Early residents of Hamilton and other Northumberland County Municipalities walked, in some instances, the 70 miles to Toronto to get a deed of their farms and what is more they did not seem to regard the one hundred and forty mile jaunt as any great feat.
In Ontario County it is stated that the earliest school house in the district, situated just this side of the town of Oshawa, was used for his purpose, the founder of the Mormons preaching there occasionally, and exploiting his views, which however, found little sympathy from the sturdy settlers of the locality.

The Village of Colborne is the top recycler in Northumberland, and the county has won silver status for diverting garbage from landfilling.
Northumberland County has won the Silver Municipal Award in the 1998 Ontario Waste Minimization Awards sponsored by the Recycling Council of Ontario.
Last month the county released pie charts for all 13 municipalities showing the average split between the percentage of waste that is recycled and landfilled.

Northumberland County is one of the first three corporations to join a high-speed fiber optics network launched October 11 in Cobourg.
County administration will pay about $1,300 a month to use the CNI system for administrative and operational efficiency in such areas as on-line banking, downloading internal information to laptop computers used by staff and councillors, and downloading internet information at 26 times the speed of conventional networks.
Heaps said the county "can do a lot better than that," and asked council to increase the county tourism budget from this year's $257,000 to a 2001 total of $275,000.

 Historical Plaques of Northumberland County
The settlement, named Colborne reputedly after Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne, soon emerged as a service centre for the surrounding region and, with the establishment of a harbour nearby for the shipment of lumber and grain, it prospered.
The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1856 spurred further growth and three years later Colborne, with a population of about 800, was incorporated as a village.
He graduated from the Ontario School of Art in 1882, contributed to the noted calendars of the Toronto Art League, and was active in the Graphics Art club and the Ontario Society of Artists.

Believing that Common Ravens are anything but common in the counties fronting on Lake Ontario (at least I've never seen one before except in the northern parts of Hastings and the counties east of that), I am reporting a sighting of two this afternoon on the Oak Ridges Moraine.
County Road 9 runs east from Bewdley, and Beagle Club Road runs south from it, a short distance west of Highway 45, which is exit 474 on Highway 401.

The early settler was required to clear a certain number of acres and erect a dwelling before he/she could obtain a patent or deed to his/her land.
Augustus Jones, the deputy provincial surveyor who had marked off the eleven townships along the north shore of Lake Ontario in the year 1791, was sent to this area by the government to make a detailed check on each settler and the improvements he/she had accomplished.
Jones' report to the government on 01 May 1799 covered five townships: Hope, Hamilton, Haldimand, Cramahe and Percy, reflecting the exact condition of settlement as of early 1799.
