There are essentially 2 types of tours: bus tours in which the canyon is seen from above, from some spectacular viewpoints, and treks in which one hikes down to the bottom of the canyon from Cabanaconde.

Even though the "canyon" is very deep; I would say that the Colca "Canyon" is not so much a traditional canyon as it is a deep river basin.
While the Colca Canyon two day or longer tour was very nice, we would recommend that the direct trip, which leaves Arequipa at 3 AM in the morning and gets back at about 6 PM, would be a much better choice if you only have a short time to stay in Peru.

About 13,000 feet above sea level, this is Condor Pass (Mirador Cruz del Condor) in Colca Canyon, where the protected surviving condors of Peru fly, soaring on currents and displaying their 10-ft. wing-spans.
Colca Canyon, deeper than Grand Canyon, is in the Arequipa region and is reached by crowded bus/van or with the company of (in our case) delightful private guides, as automobiles aren't driven on these unpaved roads.
In any case, with about 4 hours of very bumpy riding while trying to get enough oxygen in your system at that altitude, a private van is recommended.
