COLCHICUM - LoveToKnow Article on COLCHICUM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Colchicum was known to the Greeks under the name of KoXxubv, from Ko?iXLr, or Coichis, a country in which the plant grew; and it is described by Dioscorides as a poison.
As a specific for gout colchicum was early employed by the Arabs; and the preparation known as eau mdicinale, much resorted to in the 18th century for the cure of gout, owes its therapeutic virtues to colchicum; but general attention was first directed by Sir Everard Home to the use of the drug in gout.
A further curious fact, doubtless of very great significance, but hitherto lacking interpretation, is that the administration of colchicum during an acute attack of gout may often hasten the oncoming of the next attack; and this property, familiar to many gouty patients, may not be affected by the administration of small doses after the attack.

There is only one colchicum still blooming, and that is 'Waterlily.' She is always the last, and often looks the worse for it, because usually by now we've had continual hard frosts for most of October, and this has been a wonderfully mild autumn.
This is the white form of Colchicum speciosum which, just as with the white form of byzantinum, is called 'Album.' Like the typical speciosum, the flower is taller and larger than the typical byzantinum, and not nearly as generous with its blossoms, at least this year.
Most colchicums seem to take two to three days to achieve their mature color, both in the petals (technically segments) and the styles, and it is easy to think you have an albino form or at least a paler form than you actually do.

 [pbs] Colchicum questions
I've been growing colchicums for over 20 years, mostly the robust hybrids and commercial clones of the species, but they are a very confusing bunch, complicated by rampant misnaming in the trade and confusion in the literature.
autumnale 'Major', as Jim McKenney has mentioned, is a trade name for C. byzantinum, and the plant illustrated is the typical broad-segmented clone of that ancient hybrid, sent from Constantinople to Vienna in 1588.
Her colchicum is clearly an excellent clone of C. autumnale, but I would be tempted to avoid the question and call it, perfectly legitimately, Colchicum 'Nancy Lindsay'.
