  Why is Lake Temperature Important?
In deeper lakes (typically greater than 5 m for small lakes and 10 m for larger ones) during summer, the water separates into layers of distinctly different density caused by differences in temperature.
When the surface water cools again in the fall to about the same temperature as the lower water, the stratification is lost and the wind can turbulently mix the two water masses together because their densities are so similar (fall turnover).
Lake temperature also is affected by the size and temperature of inflows (e.g., a stream during snowmelt, or springs or a lowland creek) and by how quickly water flushes through the lake.

 Weather Elements: Lake Breeze Weather
It is known as the lake breeze, a similar condition to the sea breeze known along ocean shores.
Air cooled by contact with the cold lake waters is denser than that surrounding the lake and thus forms a cell of relatively high pressure over the lake.
The lake breeze frontal zone is quite narrow (1-2 km wide) and often moves slowly enough that you can walk back and forth across it from the warm land air to the cool lake air, a most interesting experience.

 In a cold dark lake
To predict environmental conditions within the lake and its potential for supporting life, the team has combined available information from remote sensing and ice core research with a new model of how the lake water circulates under the ice.
The new model suggests that microbes found in the layer of refrozen lake water (the final 60 m of the core) may be mere newcomers, which have migrated downwards through the glacial ice a journey of 500,000 years.
Lake Vostok itself is much older, and may date from when the continental ice sheet was formed, perhaps 20 million years ago.

Ancient buried lake sparks cold war in Antarctica - The Boston Globe
Lake Vostok has often been compared to Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter, where scientists suspect there may be simple life forms dwelling in the ice-capped ocean.
He and other scientists are concerned that chemicals and microbes on the drill or in the borehole will pollute the lake, and also that bacteria brought out could be dangerous to present life.
Just skimming water from the top of the lake, as the Russians plan, will not yield climate data from tens of millions of years ago, as would a core from the lake bottom.
