It was released by Family Productions, but through an error in the album's mastering, the songs were slightly too fast, causing Joel's voice to sound high and reedy.
This was remedied in 1983 when Columbia Records, his new label, re-released, remixed and edited a corrected version.
The album is named after a village of the same name, in the Town of Huntington, Joel's hometown.

One of the ideas behind a live album is to use the energy and rush of a live show to better the studio versions of an artists' songs, but there isn't one track on this album that I could say I prefer to the original, which means the live album has failed.
The sound on the album is more slick, and more beefed up and energized than any of his records before, and despite the sometimes annoying synth work, the sound has more life than any other studio record.
That all being said, the mix of this album is the best yet of any of the three live records, and almost all of these songs are classics.

He had shown signs of McCartney-esque songcraft on Hour of the Wolf, the last Hassles album, but his debut album, Cold Spring Harbor, is where these talents blossomed.
In its own way, Cold Spring Harbor was a minor gem of the sensitive singer/songwriter era; Joel may have been in his formative stages as a craftsman, but his talents are apparent, and he never made an album as intimate and vulnerable ever again.
Through a bizarre mastering error, the tapes were sped up -- legend has it that upon hearing the completed album, he ripped it off the turntable, ran out of the house, and threw it down the street.

Songs from these albums; The Stranger, 52nd Street, and the aforementioned Glass Houses became concert staples, yet Billy always included a number of his earlier songs in concert, and as the liner notes state, these songs always enjoyed a great reception.
The album starts off with a bang on "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)", which clearly presents that the listener is in for a treat.
