However, climbing is good for the legs and the cold trap entrance avoids the drafts and heat loss of a conventional doorway.
The cold trap entrance operates on the principal that cold air is heaviest and therefore settles downward.
The use of a solid door in a cold trap entrance is optional.

 Cold Traps
Cold traps are used in instrumentation and elsewhere to prevent the introduction of vapors or liquids into a measuring instrument from a system, or from a measuring instrument (such as a McLeod gauge) into the system.
For example, many of the slush mixtures used in cold traps are toxic or explosive hazards, and this is not indicated in the literature.
If the cold trap mixture is allowed to freeze, and the cold trap becomes rigid, slight movement in other parts of the apparatus could result in breakage of the trap or other glassware.

Antimatter factory - Antihydrogen TRAP Collaboration - ATRAP
TRAP observes the radio signal from a single antiproton isolated by itself in a trap.
Antiprotons enter the trap apparatus from below, and are captured in the lower section of the trap (below the place where the diameter of the support structure becomes larger.) When captured they oscillate within this lower structure, until collisions with cold electrons stored within lower their energy dramatically.
When cold antiprotons and cold positrons have both been accumulated, then a mechanical valve that separates the lower and upper regions of the trap will be opened, and the ingredients of cold antihydrogen will be allowed to interact.

The ATN6000-BPM system is a stand-alone, electro-polished, stainless steel vacuum cold trap with a quick remove dewar and bypass manifold with valves that allow isolation of the cold trap for cleaning without interrupting the vacuum to the transformer.
The cold trap holds 6 liters of dry ice slurry and has a 3” stainless steel manifold supported by a heavy gauge enameled steel frame and stand with lifting bars.
During cold trap servicing the bypass butterfly valve can be opened to allow continuous vacuum pumping by the rough pump to the transformer.

Cold Trap darkness is simply a form of shadow, which by searching the angles to the horizon (with the panospheric camera) can be determined to be permanent.

Cold Trap CT9000.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Cold Trap 9000 uses a vacuum pump based on a multi stage ejector using a carrier fluid like pressurized air which allows a simple and precise adjustment of the refrigeration fluid.
The heating of the Cold Trap 9000 is performed by giving a direct current to a small tube which allows the system to be heated up from -150°C up to 300°C in less then 20 seconds, which results in a heating rate of >1’350°C / minute.
The speed in cooling down the Cold Trap 9000 is therefore related to the GC Oven Temperature.

The Cooke long life traps are designed for vacuum applications where it is desirable to reduce oil and or water vapor contamination of the environment.
The long life traps prevent diffusion pump oil from entering the vacuum system with little effect on the conductance or the pump down time.
Although the long life cold trap series may be used directly above the diffusion pumps, it is preferable to use either a water-cooled or ambient baffle between the long life cold trap and the pump.

The Trap and Cold Bath   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The function of the trap is to protect the pump oil from contamination.
To achieve this, the trap is immersed in a cold bath which is capable of freezing out contaminants.
The low temperature of the cold bath lowers the vapor pressure of the contaminants so they will not move from the trap under the low pressure conditions.

Spirax Sarco Learning Centre: 11.2 - Steam Traps and Steam Trapping: Thermostatic Steam Traps
The adjustment allows the temperature of the trap discharge to be altered between 60°C and 100°C, which makes it ideally suited as a device to get rid of large quantities of air and cold condensate at start-up.
Heat loss from the trap then cools the water surrounding the capsule, the vapour condenses and the capsule contracts, opening the valve and releasing condensate until steam approaches again and the cycle repeats (Figure 11.2.5).
This type of trap is unlikely to freeze when working in an exposed position (unless there is a rise in the condensate pipe after the trap, which would allow water to run back and flood the trap when the steam is off).
