 OhioLINK ETD: RUIZ, ALBERTO
Unfortunately, surface acoustic waves are sensitive to spurious parameters, which are byproducts of the surface treatment, i.e., surface roughness and cold work The experimental results obtained on rough surfaces were compared to both theoretical and computational simulations for surface wave induced dispersion from the literature.
The results of this investigation revealed some important aspects of SAW propagation on surface treated metals and confirmed that in aluminum SAW dispersion is mainly sensitive to cold work effects and much less to residual stress effects.
It still can be a very useful NDE tool since quantitative assessment of the level and distribution of cold work in surface-treated metals is of primary importance from the point of thermo-mechanical stability of the beneficial residual stresses.

The cold core nature of this mid-tropospheric short wave, time of day, and additional diabatic cooling effects from the convection allowed for snowfall to occur at relatively low elevations.
Recognizing the strength of the mid-tropospheric short wave by using model and satellite data is crucial to predicting unusual weather events.

Kondratiev waves are named after Victor Kondratiev, a Russian agronomist, who suggested that economic activity could be categorized in periods of prosperity and inflation with each wave lasting 30 to 60 years.
Our research indicates that another node of such a Kondratiev Wave occurred during the inflation fighting period, marked by a 16 year trading range in the Dow Jones Industrial Average which lasted from 1966 through 1982.
As inflation fighting lessened toward the end of the Cold War, the stock market resumed a more evident long term up-trend in 1982 which we believe was boosted by the end of the Cold War when the economic strains on the United States of vying with the Soviet Union decreased starting about 1990.

Toon Zone Forum - Heat wave news: what's the big deal?
This is in part the fact that people in Texas (Kansas, Arizona, Alabama) are conditioned to heat, something lower than 90 could be considered a cold front (I'm not joking, I had people from Kansas and Texas come to my school and talk about how chilly it was in 90 degrees weather).
When they came to NYC their first few Falls/Winters were bad because they were not used to the cold.
Not only are folks not used to the heat, but they don't have anywhere to go to get out of the heat (unlike most places in the U.S. that are air conditioned).

"Cold War", "America", and "Trains" revert back to the first track in terms of style, and "Bunkers" uses a punk energy and reggae beat not dissimilar to some of the Clash's earlier work, released not long before this album.
All-in-all, this album is a pleasant and competent example of the amorphously-termed "New Wave" from the early 1980's that MTV helped to bring to the forefront of American popular music...just as it was dying out in Great Britain.
The New Clear Day cd features the British release that included two songs, Cold War and America not found on the US edition, but also this cd includes Prisoner that was on the US edition but not the British!

This part feels just like catching a "normal" progressive wave, the only difference being that, though you and the wave have roughly the same relative speed as when you're paddling into a progressive wave, you happen to be moving toward the wave and the wave is standing still.
It is quite feasible to locate and surf a rideable standing wave, providing a great means of staying in touch with your board during the spring/summer doldrums.
Most surfers would be able to recognize a suitable standing wave, as it is similar in appearance to a progressive wave, i.e.

Heat can be applied to the skin where the major arteries are near the surface—at the neck for the carotid, at the armpits for the brachial, and at the groin for the femoral artery.
Heat syncope (fainting) is a mild form of heat illness that results from physical exertion in a hot environment.

Drag Reduction Using Counterflow Jet Injection
Designers must seriously consider the large wave drag on an air or space vehicle's aerodynamic design due to the increase in entropy across the shock wave surrounding the body in high-speed flight.
In experimental studies, scientists observed a 30-50% nose drag reduction using cold gas injection.
However, the vehicle's total drag reduction can be as small as 5-10% after scientists take into consideration the percentage contribution of the nose drag reduction to the total drag of the vehicle and the complexity of the potential configuration.

 Generalized Faraday rotation
In a cold plasma the natural wave modes may be assumed circularly polarized for present purposes.
The natural wave modes of the medium are orthogonally polarized and hence they correspond to points at the opposite ends of a diagonal through the center of the Poincaré sphere.
It is apparent from this example that if the wave modes are elliptical or linear, then radiation that is initially linearly polarized develops a circularly polarized component as the polarization changes in a periodic manner along the ray path (e.g., Pacholczyk and Swihart 1970).

For their structure, the disturbances possess a well-organized vortex in the middle to upper troposphere with a descending dry/cold core encircled by the moist ascending air around the vortex periphery; the secondary circulation of the vortex is opposite to other types of synoptic disturbances.
Wave energy accumulates at wave numbers 7 and 8 at 200 mb and at wave number 11 in the lower troposphere.
Since equatorial waves are important synoptic disturbances to the weather of this region, an effort was made in this study to explore the possible impact of the 30-60-day mode on the occurrence frequency and westward propagation of these waves.

Physics of Alfvn Waves at Quantum Books
Waves are considered under a variety of plasma conditions, ranging from cold cosmic plasmas, to hot laboratory and solar plasmas, to the relativistic plasmas around pulsars.
In particular, non-ideal effects on the dispersion relation and absorption properties of linear and non-linear waves are included, such as ion-cyclotron effects, friction between the ionized plasma and a background gas of neutral atoms, and the interaction of the plasma with dust particles.
Low-frequency wave modes of magnetized inhomogeneous plasmas have been subject to intense study in the last decade because they play important roles in the transport of energy in the plasmas.

Examination of the zonal mean temperatures (not shown) shows that the summer mesopause temperatures are 120 K for the strong gravity wave drag run (which is probably too cold by about 10 K), and 160 K for the weak gravity wave drag run (which is too warm).
This was expected since we believe the two-day wave is excited by baroclinic instability, and the vertical shear on the top of the summer easterly jets is much stronger in the strong gravity wave drag run.
It is intended to use the EEUGCM to examine the tides, the two-day wave and other planetary waves in the mesosphere, and their interaction with gravity wave drag.
