Colditz Castle is a castle in the town of Colditz near Leipzig, Dresden, and Chemnitz in the state of Saxony in Germany (51°7′38.208″ N 12°48′30.384″ E).
Under Frederick the Wise and Johann the Gentle, Colditz was a royal residence of the Electors of Saxony.
Colditz Castle was also home to several notable figures during its time as a mental institution, including Ludwig Schumann, the second youngest son of the famous composer Robert Schumann, and Ernst Georg August Baumgarten, one of the original inventors of the airship.

In one of the most ambitious escape attempts from Colditz, the idea of building a glider was dreamt up by two pilots, Jack Best and Bill Goldfinch, who had been sent to Colditz after escaping from another POW camp.
The Colditz Story (1955) was a dramatic film re-enactment of life in the camp during WW2, based entirely on the novels of Pat Reid, directed by Guy Hamilton, who would later go on to direct three of the James Bond movies.

Colditz is a little town in the eastern part of Germany (in the federal state of Saxony), in the triangle formed by Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz.
The Colditz Society, a society for people with a personal interest in Colditz, was established in England in 1991 and the already mentioned Kenneth Lockwood brought this to my attention.
The Colditz glider was constructed in the attics of the castle and was intended to be launched from the castle roof to take two men to safety across the river Mulde.

Colditz castle was the German "Supermax." RAF prisoners like Jack Best, Walter Morison, and Lorne Welch, recaptured after escaping from other POW camps were transferred to the supposedly inescapable Colditz.
Many of the men imprisoned at Colditz are still alive today, and there is a quite active "Colditz Association." Lorne Welch had a long and active role in soaring after the war, writing several books on the subject.
Colditz Castle was reportedly used after the war as a hospital for Russian officers, and has since fallen into serious disrepair.

It was based on the books "Colditz and the Latter Days" by Pat Reid which tell the story of a group of Allied POWs who have been sent to the most heavily guarded prison camp in Germany.
The series was so good that I did not miss a single show of it, I also bought the books on Colditz written by Reinhold Eggers (known as Ullmann in the series) and Pat Reid.
The series show how the POWs had to live in Colditz, a few went insane some died while trying to escape and some made a succesful escape.

It is important not to forget that the Colditz series was actually based on the very real events which happened between 1941 and 1945 to all the officers who were incarcerated in the Colditz castle.

In a two-and-a-half hour recording, Mazumdar recalls the events of 1939 to 1945 when he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was posted to France, till the time he was sent to Gaya, India, in 1945.
In those turbulent war years, he was made a prisoner of war by the Germans in the Colditz, tortured, kept in solitary confinement for defying the Nazis, wooed by the Germans to join Subhas Bose's Indian Legion, threatened with execution for not doing so and accused of being a spy.
It was only recently that he joined the Colditz Association, who alerted the Imperial War Museum of his story.
