In Utah, the Utah banded gecko (Coleonyx variegatus utahensis) is designated as a "controlled reptile" which means this subspecies cannot be possessed or sold without a Certificate of Registration from the state of Utah.
In Texas, the reticulated gecko (Coleonyx reticulatus) is listed as threatened and collection of this species requires a permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife (Levell, 1995).
Coleonyx spend the majority of their time under rocks or debris in areas that have a much higher relative humidity than the surrounding habitat.

In New Mexico, the western banded gecko (Coleonyx variegatus) and Texas banded gecko (Coleonyx brevis) occur in the southern third of the state.
The largest Coleonyx variegatus are approximately 4 inches in total length with the Texas banded geckos being about an inch shorter.
